Lines, Ellipses and Boxes

Hi,

This is my Lesson 1 Homework. I've been drawing like a hobby for about 5 years now. I've recently found Draw A Box, so I grabbed the opportunity to get better at art. I like that this site is exercise based, which - as you'll see from my crappy boxes - I need the most. :) The best is that I can see my mistakes.

About my homework:

Lines: these exercises I found enjoyable. Ghosted planes were a bit tricky, but that was fun too.

Ellipses: at this point I realized how much I can not control my hand movements. Squeezing ellipses into exact space is not easy. :)

Boxes: plotted perspective was fun, but I had difficulties because I found the pen too thick for such precise lines. After this exercise I could not blame the pen any more. Rough perspective made me struggle so much, and it just kept getting worse. :D Rotated boxes was the first exercise I that took me for about 4 hours of trying. My final version still looks awkward. Organic perspective... I've done something similar before. But to be honest I was more confident drawing with pencil than with pen. My mind couldn't get over the "I can't do it" attitude, which I can totally see in the result. Also as I was concentrating on drawing a "proper" box, I forgot about scaling up for the next box, and vice versa...

Thank you for your time evaluating my homework! :D

Hi overall good job and congrats finishing first lesson :)

Lines and Ellipses

They're looking p good, though your ellipses do get a bit wobbly. That's difficult to keep them within bounds, so don't forget to keep working on them. Also good job on Funnels (Minor axis cuts ellipses in halves).

Boxes

Boxes are good too.

On rough perspective good job keeping vertical lines perpendicular to the horizon and horizontal parallel.

Rotated Boxes exercise is fine, though some boxes look a bit off, but it's fine.

Organic perspective main issue is perspective, but nothing to worry about, as you'll work on it in 250 boxes challenge.

Overall good job and keep it up.

Next Steps:

Next Steps:

Continue to use these exercises as part of your warm ups (about 10-15 minutes)

Feel free to move onto the 250 box challenge

Don’t forget to take breaks and draw for fun!

Also, now that you’ve completed Lesson 1, I encourage you to critique some Lesson 1 community submissions. Not only will this help the community, but it will also solidify and reinforce your understanding of the material. Of course, this is optional (but we’d be especially grateful!). If you’d like to give it a shot, see this guide that was created by one of our community members on how to go about critiquing Lesson 1.
This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Thank you ! Fitting ellipses into space was difficult for me, I'll work on that more.

No worries bro ;)

It was difficult for me too)

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
