Took a challenge of drawing 100 heads from different angles then also this. I think my new year resolution will be keeping my sanity. Will get back to this one day, you better not show your weakness when you have to look at 100 chests!

250 box challenge and now this. it's like you enjoy boxes or something you sadist!

That aside, this seems very interesting and I've enjoyed drawing treasure chest before, gotta give this a try. I might lose my sanity before 10 chests tho.

Here's my submission for this lesson.

Generally stayed on the safe side of 2 point perspective, but came out from the comfort zone here and there to try out the 3 point one.

Also, I've found when searching for references of vehicles, searching for their blueprints proved to be really useful to get clear side/front view of the specific vehicles. Used this site a lot during the lesson.

That aside, really looking forward for the reply! Been waiting to finish this up to continue other goals for quite awhile now! :)

Camera angle sure did some tricks on that. On paper the verticals don't seem that bad, but certainly learned from that and will be using the ruler to help in the future. Just seem to have a little trouble with ruler and ballpoint pen and end up drawing things on different places where I want (Like the arbitrary point mirroring which wasn't my intention at all..)

this certainly helped me a lot and some stuff clicked from me after this, so thanks a lot!

I got a little question to add. How should I draw the side wheels if I want them to be attached to the main box with no space between the wheel and main box? This is what I feel like I'm struggling with and just can't get it right at all. I want the tire to be on a lower level than the main box, but I seem like I just keep putting space between them instead of making it lower. I'm sorry for all these extra stuff, but I just can't seem to continue these stuff as this has been bothering my head all week lol.

I feel like these stuff are slowly starting to click on my head though, thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my extra questions. I'll make sure to donate extra next time I'll finish a lesson. You have been REALLY HUGE help ever since I picked up the pen approx 1 year ago after seeing your site. I feel like I definitely need to show some appreciation! :)

Hey Uncomfortable. Passing by asking something related to the earlier question again.. Sorry for asking so much, been trying to figure this out, but after over 5 hours of drawing over and over, I just don't seem to understand this and don't seem to progress with this at all.

So for the earlier question, I seem to generally understand where and how the other side ends, but I'm tiny bit confused with it. I drew a little example of it. Example picture. I highlighted the green area I was confused of. If the tires (boxes in this case) are on the same position, shouldn't they be in the same position on those side planes?

One thing I could come up with was that the tires aren't attached to the main bigger box, leaving gap between it, which is why it looks different on the opposite side plane. If that is the case, how do I draw a tire that leaves a quite big gap between the ground and the main structure of the vehicle (A tractor for example.)

Hopefully the explanation was good enough, thanks again and sorry for the extra questions. I've tried over 20 pages trying different things without quite coming up with a conclusion for this, so I decided to seek for help as I got a quite headache over few days because of this not knowing how to advance..

Alright, thanks a lot for taking the time for the help! :)

Yeah, I kinda came to the realization I could've used the box up there could be used as the middle. I added some lines after reading your advice and tried different stuff before taking the picture, so there's WAY too many lines around and I definitely missed them and that they had their uses.

But asking this question helped me a lot with this, guess some of these stuff comes with experience! Thanks a lot for the help this was really useful.

Also to confirm (if my method was understandable that is), was my way to tackle it with the width of the tire and expanding the plane that way also a correct in term of perspective?

dencontrol in the post "Lesson 7: Drawing Vehicles (new 40min intro video, 3 new demos)"

2017-01-02 19:30

I was thinking of that method, but since I didn't know where the plane ends while still constructing the box, it lead me into not knowing where's the center point of the plane.

Here's the situation I was stuck with. I was constructing the box, had the lines head toward the vanishing point, but I had no clue where should I close the box at the exact spot where it would be accurate in perspective on where the other tire ends. So I used the width of the closer tire as a measure and expanded it few times until I landed somewhere which seemed to be accurate and close the box there. Is this a viable method and is there easier way to do this?

I'm sorry if the drawing is really messy, it's mostly a prototype where I drew bunch of lines seeing what works for the question I asked (Also bunch of laziness). Also sorry if the question was confusing!

Hello Uncomfortable, today while doing the lesson for the lay-ins while drawing tires, I ran into the problem not knowing where should I end the other side.

What methods can I use to know where the the same sized tire ends on the other side (That is further from the viewer) especially when you are not using the "encapsulating box" method?

Like this on the demo

Hopefully the question was clear enough, otherwise I could throw in some drawings I've been doing to see if that helps! So far I've been doing the measuring in perspective - video technique to expand the box with the tire's width until it seem to make sense where the tire sits on the other side and draw it like that.

here's my submission for the challenge! Did this on the side with the lesson 6 as warmup before going through the lesson, so quality might vary?

(Really shaky pictures, sorry.)

Thank you for the feedback!

There's actually more mistakes in average than the ones shown in the submission, as I still tend to aim to get the drawing as perfect as possible. Way less these days as I used to draw weeks until I was satisfied with the drawing I was trying. But as time passes by I'm starting to learn how adapting to the mistakes and working with them can also be a valuable thing to learn and I'll strive to do that.

Looking forward for the next lesson! Drawing simple forms and objects and putting them together to build something bigger is oddly satisfying.

Hello Uncomfortable! Here's my submission

The beginning of this lesson was pretty frustrating as things felt like they were way too hard to draw, but toward the end as I slowly got hang of the methods, they felt easier to do.

Subdividing I always seem to have the problem after doing the first cross, to draw the middle line I always seem to screw it up in a way or another, gets better toward the end though.

I used the final page to give the two plane drawing method a try, after hours of frustration and about 5 tries, finally got it to look like a mouse, learned some major things during those, will definitely give that a try once again at some point. (Maybe when I pick up digital, the messiness from ink was a really huge part of why it was frustrating.)

one really good thing through this lesson though, I learned how to draw straight lines much better during the lesson. (Was ruler allowed in this lesson btw?) but mixed with the 250 cylinder challenge along with this lesson, I'm quite satisfied with the straight lines I've been drawing free hand through the lesson.

Here's the submission for this lesson!

On the earlier lessons, I generally always end up spending weeks on drawing a single plant until I end up with the version I'm satisfied with. But after reading here and there, how the point isn't to show you pretty drawings, I've generally submitted pretty early works without too much finetuning to indicate my "real" ability better, I suppose.

Last pages has lots of cat species there, as through out the lesson I never really understood how to draw their face, so I felt like throwing in some practice while I got the chance to. (Any tutorials HIGHLY appreciated.

That aside, thanks a lot in advance! My older submissions can be easily found on the reddit post history as I don't really use this account for much, so if you want to peek at them to see if there's any improvements that would be really nice! :D

You greedy money-grubber!

I'm just kidding, thanks for everything you've done for the community and I can't stress enough, how much I've learned and how much impact you had for me to pick up the pen.

Past 6 years I've been living under the thought that I didn't start off drawing when I was a kid like other people, it's too late now until last year I had a little interest lit up through a friend, after little research and finding this site, I thought "Screw it, these lessons seems exactly what I need, someone to guide me from basic things to more advanced things and it's free too, what I got to lose?". Drawabox was definitely the trigger that kicked me in the butt for me to stop thinking and just start doing.

Now after approx 10 months of drawing, I'm still as excited about drawing as I was when I first started and have never felt so much motivation to learn and to improve something in my life before. If it wasn't for you giving me little goals with your lessons, I might be wandering around blindly without knowing what to do.

Thank you once again, especially for the HUGE amount of effort you've put for this. It's great to know, no matter how small or silly the question is, you'll still take your time to give a detailed reply for it. (Sorry for bothering you so much with pms here and there at times, don't beat me, I'll draw boxes in exchange.)

Will definitely be upgrading my patreon up to 3$monthly. Or donate 3$ for that month on the PayPal when I need to submit a homework? I read something about one time payment in the comment was a little bit confused, is that how it works? (I'm a little bit busy at times and might take months to finish a lesson, also a little bit tight on money at times, so one-time thing would definitely be great!)

Hello Uncomfortable, a little question on the white pelican demo, there's a a line you drew approx a little bit under half of the neck all the way down, which at first I thought it was part of those adding muscles - part. Which afterward you didn't quite use the entire line to build the pelican with but instead, you drew inside of it.

I was mostly wondering the reason for that, or more of a mindset of it, as this lessons seems to be much more step by step construction based as opposed to earlier ones like insects and this lesson seems pretty hard for me, so I'm just trying to understand certain steps, to see if I could use them myself to make things a bit easier.

Was this done just to have an approx how the front body goes, without fully committing to the line, or was it a mistake that you drew it that far from the body and fixed it afterwards?

Also I could contribute a little while asking a question!

There's a word missing a letter in the lesson paragraph "These are often easier to wrap your head aroud than smooth curving surfaces, especially in situations with a lot of foreshortening and perspective."

Really minor thing and probably not worth mentioning, but thought why not, there's no harm I guess :P

Thanks in advance!

Here's scanned version.

And here's the same drawings with camera, just got the scanner recently, so not sure which one is better for the drawings, so did both! Will go with the option which you see better in the future.

Also tried adding more line weight here and there as mentioned on the last lesson I wasn't pressing the pen fully. (The last lesson is in my posting history, don't use this account for anything else but lessons, if you have time to check if there's any improvement that would be great!)

Skipped the textures for this lesson, mostly because insects scares the living soul out of me also that I plan to tackle the texture challenge somewhere during these days.

Thank you!

Thanks a lot for the criticism!

I have always felt my ability with the felt tip pen is certainly lacking, as like you said, I can build up value with pencil but not so much with pen. Working on it though! Most of the time during my practices I still use pencils as I'm pretty poor-ish and felt tip pens aren't too cheap in my country (Also runs out really fast) so I tend to only practice with them here and there and mostly use them on the homework submission. Is this a bad thing?

I'll definitely check both challenges later when I have some time, especially the texture one, when your comment of the mindset with the hatching lines were so accurate.

Also a little question toward the felt tip pen. Every mark I put down is generally full dark or close is really accurate of how I've felt with the pen so far (which has also been the biggest difficulty of using one.) On these lessons you mentioned on the homework part :

It has been in my mind before but never remembered to ask. I have felt like from lesson 1, no matter what kind of pressure, I still seem to get same kind of mark on the page. Unless if I have a really light touch on it, then the line gets thinner, but seeing the comment about fainter strokes not being the best road to take, how does pressure control come into play on this?

Sorry if I'm asking silly questions, English not being my main language, I often misunderstand simple things like these!

Spent an entire hour trying to mess with Imgur completely annoyed as it just didn't let me upload the pictures at all. Settled down with Dropbox with terrible arranging order on pictures so.. But didn't want to waste any more time.

The page order should be almost like that, but started with the aloe marlothii -> lily -> blue ginger -> cactus -> then the new lesson with the leaves and stems -> Flytrap, then the last 4 pictures.

Sorry for the messy order, as i almost broke stuff trying to upload on the Imgur without getting anything done for an hour.

Most of those pages has the circle focal point following the older lesson's format. Looking forward for your feedback, I assume I'll have to do few more pages as the newer lesson emphasizes more on the construction than the older one and I feel like I end up neglecting it a little bit?

However, learned a lot from this lesson, took me a really long time to finish this (4 months?) as the jump between lesson 2 and 3 was pretty huge. And I spent good amount of time for each page, as learning how to draw them properly took forever, although way better toward the end. I should do a collection of first and final product as the gap is huge.

Thank you! :)

Edit : Also not sure if the Patreon flair shows up o.o
