Thanks for the quick response and your critiques. I can I'm starting to see 3d forms better with each one, though furry/fluid animals like the cats/dogs I still have issues major building up/carving.

I was using overlays to help identify my proportion issues. I understand we are not looking for reproduction - just wanted a tool to see where I'm disconnecting intent from execution.

Thanks!

Thanks - I'm worried I may have inadvertently hidden the album for the actual homework assignment. Not sure if you saw it and there weren't that many issues, or if my rambling obscured my non-practice attempts lesson 5: https://imgur.com/a/ZUpdl

Lesson 5

I went down some rabbit holes And then down further I started overlaying my sketches during these diversions. I know we're not looking for reproduction, but I think it helped me get proportions closer to what I was trying for. I still tend to shrink heads though.

I found following along with the demos and then attempting the same picture without referring to the demo to be really helpful. Here's those and some practices.

Also started working on the texture challenge - which is evil.

Awesome - thanks! I was getting frustrated midway. Re-trying the same picture several times over (I did this two or three times) snapped me out of the rut finally.

I knew that was the weakest head - it had rubbish construction to start, but looking at it again, yes, the texture flattened out any hope it had of being solid.

I've got to confess on the hatched shadows - I was usually covering up the hot mess of shadow outlines I'd go through. A lot of the source pictures were low angles, and usually curved or rough terrain so threading shadow through foot placement (especially when foot placement is off) broke my brain (especially after focusing so long on the actual bug). I should have taken more time with the shadows and not drawn until I had thoroughly thought through each one.

I was worried you'd get on me for over-using the brush. It's an invitation to trouble - so easy to use not just to fill in areas but also to lay down thick lines quickly, then to fill in that little area, then to darken up that detail... I used it for a lot of the detailing on the big grasshopper here: http://i.imgur.com/06GNGgQ.jpg I tried to be restrained with it and learn how to wield its power without bleeding too much ink all over - hopefully I was somewhat successful.

Thanks again - animal drawing time!

Lesson 4 here: http://imgur.com/a/jHQ37

I included the demo follow-alongs and some warmups. I got a brush pen halfway through - I went overboard with it a few times, but I can't imagine doing some of fill-in areas without it.

Thanks!

No apology needed - the sketch is very helpful and communicates what I needed. I think you hit the head on the nail for both the leaf and sunflower issues. I know what i'm supposed to be doing, until I get down to actually putting ink down and instead of thinking through it's easier to just start putting in detail.

Thanks for putting the time in to do a 2nd sunflower demo. I think I was trying to add depth in the center with everything except building up a 3d shape. I can work with thinking about donuts.

I'll practice these some more and start digging into lesson 4 materials. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, and thanks especially for the effort and attention you put into this.

I wanted to make sure I understood your feedback so I took another attempt at the leaves and the sunflower: http://imgur.com/a/S3UZy

Is this in the right direction? Is there someone I should put into my warmup rotation to work on further?

Thanks!

Lesson 3 submission: http://imgur.com/a/P38iD

Had pen issues. Still doing my ellipse-trace-practice - works great as a warmup and now feels wrong to start drawing anything without a page of ellipses. Hard to tell if they're improving, seems like they're getting less lumpy overall though.

I've got a few more pages leaves and plants - but I decided to restart after following along with the demo's and watching the Patreon video demos. I'm glad I did - things look much better - fewer oddly proportioned items.

Another round of 250 cylinders for your review: http://imgur.com/a/uGl0Z

You had mentioned working on my ellipses in my lesson 2 submission (they seemed a bit stiff) - so I decided to try the cylinder challenge to work on ellipses. I also made some template pages to help guide my practice toward correct ellipse shapes. I've started holding the pen more vertically and focused more on letting my shoulder drive the pen. I'm still working on finding right speed. I'm still struggling with egg shapes and lumpy ellipses. Any suggestions or exercises that might help?

Thanks again!

I enjoyed this lesson very much. Thanks for the critiques, and Merry Christmas!

Thanks - off to start Lesson 2.

I talked to her about practicing, but she's moved on to Play doh. Kids these days ¯_()_/¯

Going through and marking corrections, I noticed I fought skewed/melting corners a lot. Other issues I was fighting include fuzzy/stray lines, and bendy lines. My line issues got worse when distracted or in a bad seating/working position. I didn't see your notes about hashing the front-faces until I started the corrections - I got better about using line weight after box 60.
