Intermittently throughout the last couple years, we've been selling fineliners which we've imported ourselves. The obvious question, is why:
- To put it simply, fineliners are massively overpriced, costing several dollars each from most stores. They're a bit cheaper if you buy them in sets, but usually those sets will include a variety of sizes - not just multiples of the 0.5mm this course recommends.
- Quality varies from brand to brand, and even from pen to pen. "Duds" are not uncommon, and cheaper brands tend to be less resilient - either running out of ink quickly, or wearing out their tips with minimal pressure.
By importing them en masse, we can get good quality pens for far cheaper, and then pass some of those savings onto the community, while still setting some aside to support Drawabox. Our pens are individually tested (on the back of a card we provide to you in the package) to avoid duds. They're alcohol marker safe and work pretty well with water based media as well. We've found them to be fairly similar to Staedtler's Pigment Liners (which have been my go-to pen over the years).
In our own testing, we've been able to get through all of Lesson 1's homework, as well as halfway through the 250 box challenge before showing signs of wear. Of course, how much pressure you use will affect your experience, so mileage will vary.
