I've never used a ellipse guide before, so this may seem a dumb question. I noticed the 25 Wheel challenge we are encouraged to use an ellipse guide in constructing our wheels so I went out and got one. 000825.jpg (2000×2000) (blucommerce.com)

It only has 5 set templates for ellipsis with degrees between 20' and 60'. It was the only one I could find in the shops and it was reasonably priced.

The instructions reminds us that, as with all cylindrical forms, the degree of the ellipses will subtly vary depending on how near or far it is from the viewer, but looking at my new ellipses guide I can only do shifts of 10 degrees at a time.

The question is, is better to construction the wheels with the limitation that each shift in degree of the ellipsis will be always a fixed multiple of 10, ignore the degree shift or just freehand it?

While the limitation makes things a little awkward, you will find that it's not nearly as bad as it seems. You are far better off working with the ellipse guide, rather than freehanding them.

Thanks. I was just wondering whether there was a trick with regards to ellipses guide to get intermediate degree, I guess not. I just making all the the ellipses on the same wheel the same degree.

In fairness, the degree of the ellipses is the least my problems when it comes to drawing wheels.
