Hello Xtris, Welcome to Drawabox! I hope you're doing very well.

Now, I’ll be taking a look at your lesson 1 submission today.

The first advice is for your next lesson submission. Try to arrange your picture's in "imgur" one by one in the right order of lesson one curriculum so every picture you took from the Unit try to arrange it weather you type the name of the Unit on paper or typing lessons exercise name and number on imgur comment on every comment of all pictures and here is an example of that.

and for the person who critique you to make it simple for him, So he can help and critique your submission efficiently.

and let's go now to the first section of your submission.

Starting with your lines.

Your superimposed lines exercise your lines were confident and most of them start at one point and goes without [fraying](https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/1585f266.jpg) on both ends.

Sometimes the lines will arch a bit.

It's worth mentioning this might happen because they are not mostly using the shoulder pivot. It can happen while using the shoulder too however, and in this case it can be fixed by trying to arch consciously to the opposite direction.

Also you repeated the lines 8 times and that what you have to do. Good job!

The ghosted lines your lines weren't wobbly at all and you were prioritizing confidence over accuracy and that's a really good thing you have to keep doing.

also you were always trying to start from one point and you didn't fry at two point's. Amazing!

The ghosted planes you haven't repeated lines even how off a line is, you kept the lines as if it were correct and moved on.

also you were trying to start lines with starting and ending points so you didn't freehand them and you were trying to prioritize confidence over accuracy.

and what this lessons were telling you is to draw from your shoulder so try to always repeat and use this technique because it's the key to drawing confidently.

Moving on to your ellipses.

Your table of ellipses were good as a start and you can improve them with:

1- That your ellipses should be kept within the bounds, each ellipse touching each other, without overlapping.

2- and you should prioritize confident and smoothness, over accuracy. ( and I saw that you did that when you started your new page so try to make it more precise by doing that).

And you went through ellipses 2 or 3 times in most of them so you nailed it.

To your ellipses in planes and they came out well. (just try to take a look more at the table of ellipses points of improvement that I stated for you).

The funnels I saw that the line in the middle (minor axis) were not cutting ellipses in 2 symetrical halves and the reason behind that was you weren't rotating pages to the place were you can approach them so they cut themselves into two symetrical halves.

so just try to find your executing angle to approach them a confident way.

You've went through them twice and that's a plus point.

and you strived to keep them tangent to the edges of the planes with a fair amount of accuracy. but, as uncomfortable always say: confidence is prioritize over accuracy. so don't forget that.

and you were doing that to your best ability so keep improving.

Finishing with Boxes

Your plotted perspective although you did not draw more than 3 boxes in every composition but you were to the point of starting you lines from the beginning of the vanishing point's so you are through all things stated in this exercise.

and you were doing them on the safe zone which is FOV of 90° so I'm not seeing any distortion.

also you only didn't go and give the boxes strokes and that is optional so if you did it it was going to be more appealing but what you did is enough because the thing that you have to get here is learning from doing the exercise to your best ability not showing that you are doing things perfectly so keep moving.

Therough perspective exercise.

The first thing is your lines were a little bit wobbly so try to go over again of what I stated in my critique for you about the Ghosted lines and Superimposed line so you can have a broad understanding of them.

but over all you were trying to do them confidently so just try to not hesitate when drawing a line to make sure that you draw them confidently and unconsciously and without any effort.

The second thing is your vertical lines and horizontal lines were not parallel (perpendicular as [here](https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/3b2783db.jpghttps://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/3b2783db.jpg)) to each other but your intuitive guesses aren't too far off, and as your spatial reasoning improves, so will your accuracy. so keep that in mind.

the third thing is that you realized how to make you boxes to letting them go to the same VP and that is shown from your second page of it which when you used the line correction method so you are going through it and that's a good job you've accomplished.

also you weren't using guessing which is not pointing boxes to one vanishing point so you weren't using any kind of 2 or three perspective so you restricted yourself one only as the exercise told you to do.

Your rotated boxes were nearly as perfect as you anyone can think of them so you done them pretty well.

most of your boxes converge to the same vanishing point and you were keeping corners between boxes close.

they are rotating because your lines vanishing point's are to precise.

and the only thing to mention here is that you forget drawing the last four boxes in the upright and up left also down left and downright but the box is showing a completion even if they are not there but you have to keep that in mind.

Finally, your organic perspective you were converging all boxes nearly to the same vanishing point, which is every side VP.

your lines were drawn confidently and this is why I see some mistakes here and there which you can fix them by time not instantly so keep drawing confidently as you're doing that now and learn more by practicing.

The only issue here is that you have to see that when we are drawing a box in perspective you have to make sure that it's Y segment is smaller a little bit that the last box you draw so you can maintain making smaller boxes to make the composition as real as possible and by that you are giving it a depth so when you look at it you will see 3D space.

The last thing is that it is normal on organic perspective and rotated boxes for the perspective to have mistakes so you will work on it on the box challenge.

**I will finish with this advices here and what to do next.

**

And try to do the exercise which they are the daily exercises that uncomfortable stated through lesson one which they are gathered in this one [here](https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/1d32f0c9.jpg).

so as you can see in the picture there is 3 exercises in one.

The first one is ghosted lines.

The second one is ghosted planes.

and The third one is Ellipses in planes.

So try keeping them as a daily routine (10-15 minutes) by only doing as the same photo I attached for Ellipses in planes that will help a lot.

What I saw from critiquing and reviewing your submission that you got the gist of each exercise and what I decided was that your work is marked as complete.

Congratulations Xtris on completing lesson 1 and good luck in the 250-box challenge!

Best regards.

you know, i was expecting critiques and advice but not to this level of detail so i just wanted to sincerely say thank you.

Now then....AAAAAAAAA!!!!! SORRY dear critique person Laughtale i didnt know we had to arrange the exercises like that, ill correct my next submission in the future!

but yes ive been trying to strive for confidence in my strokes over the precision which came back to bite me in later exercises. I will continue to improve on my strokes both in accuracy and precision while maintaing the confidence

The ellipses exercises in my opinion was the hardest part of lesson 1, even more than rotated boxes, i for the life of me figure out to draw the ellipses in one motion added with the use of the shoulder which made things way more difficult. But after a few days break i returned to it and found myself being more confident in excecuting those little devils even though the product came out questionable.

I will take the critiques and advices to heart and use them in my future endeavors.

and again, thank you so so much

That's awesome! So keep your vision for learning how to draw and strive to be a great "great art-maker"

I hope the best for you. if there is any thing that you didn't understand or you want to understand I'll be happy to help with my best ability.

So keep it up.

My pleasure.

and have a good day.

take care.

I think you are missing ghosted planes from the first part of the lesson! can you post It?

Next Steps:

I'll need ghosted planes please

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi! ive combined the ghosted planes with the..-goes to check- ellipses in planes exercise!

unless i forgot..

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
