Back after over a year! Had to stop after completing the 250 box challenge. Unfortunately I was never able to post it and moved countries since completing the challenge. So decided to pick up where I left off.

Hey, I'll be reviewing your work!

You should post the 250 Box Challenge so that someone can review it and give you tips further on, but if its complete, I'll just review it as is.

In Arrows, the lines are confident and clean, but a problem is that the arrows that the arrows don't have depth to them. An example of this would be https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/011d064f.jpg. As the arrows goes trowards the viewer, the farther part is more compressed then the other. This gives the illusion of space and creates a convincing arrow. Another is that it is recommended that you add line weight, where the lines overlap so that it is easier to read.

In Organic Forms, the forms aren't the same all around, it should be a tube connected by two balls https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/0f7c806c.jpg. The ellipses in the first page of it aren't confident. It is important that you go back in earlier lessons to refresh your mind and get the musle memory after moving. Another one is that some of the ellipses are not aligned to the line you drew. Your ellipses don't have a noticeable change in degrees, which doesn't make sense and there needs to be some sort of change. In the second page, the lines wrapping the form look off. Just like ellipses, there needs to be some change to it, and adding too much of it can break the 3D form of it. Remember, you are drawing from outside the forms from the viewers perspective.

In Textures, the problem I have is that you didn't fill the textures, or used them in a way that made this sort of gradient e.g with the paper texture not being black or white, and had a clear intention of having a gradient. This is not ideal as this exercise was to practice choosing which are black forms and which are white forms, not try to do crosshatching to make a gray form. Another thing is filling the black shapes, it looks unfinished, but isn't a problem, just try to fill up the black shapes and don't try to lazily put it in

In Dissections, there is the same problems in textures, like not filling shapes. Overall, there isn't anythign that stood out, it looks like mine when I started and I would say this is the most time consuming exercise.

Time for my favorite, Intersections. In the first page, it just seemed like you just drew around your boxes which isn't good, but this is a hard excercise. You won't go back through this until later on, and I won't be judging to harshly. All of the forms look like they are from the same space, so that it a gold star for me.

In Organic Intersections, same with organic forms, the forms outside look flat and needs to be a tube connecting two balls. Overall, there isn't anything that seems off (that could be me being lazy so yea).

I think taking a review of Arrows and Organic Forms would help with the lessons later on. I'll be giving you revisions

Next Steps:

1 Page of Arrows

1 Page of Organic Forms (1/2 Full Ellipses, 1/2 Contour Ellipses)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thanks so much for the critique. Unfortunately I didn't take the pages from the 250 box challenge with me. Do you think I should complete it again?

And I definitely see a lot of your points for the critique. Regarding the textures I really struggled with the crumpled paper analysis, however I felt like I did a better job filling with only solid black on my other texture analyses.

I really really appreciate you taking the time to go through my work and I have attached my revisions for your viewing whenever you get the chance (I know everything is sort of on hold at the moment). Thanks!

Your arrows are a good attempt and is better than the first ones. That is a pass in my book!

For organic forms, there seems to be problems with ellipses. It still seems wobbly and not confident. I suggest looking back on lesson 1 warmup like ellipses in tables or planes.

Overall, the revisions were good, you may continue on

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
