Hi Azimuthzero,

The first thing I notice in your work is that all of your lines and ellipses are kinda wobbly. Probably you tried to draw correctly to the aimed destination but that made you lose your confidence in doing straight lines. Please remember, the lesson 1 helps you to focus more in feeling the flow of your hands than trying to control your lines with your mind. Don't be afraid of overshooting or undershooting or even miss the points completely. Please try to draw with your shoulder, it helps to straighten your lines better.

Now let's go to each section.

In Superimposed Lines, I can see that you draw with confidence, hence, some of your lines are straight and not wobbly. All your lines start at exact one place at the beginning, this is good. In Ghosted Lines, your lines become wobbly a bit, even though they are straight. Some lines are arc, which is the result of using knee or your wrist to draw.

In Table of Ellipses, your control in making second strike goes as the first one is good, they are really close with each other. But again, you tried to control to much by your brain, the ellipses are really wobbly. Somehow, I see that Table 1 is better than Table 2. In Ellipses in Planes, you have done a good job in making planes without missing the points. I can see that you tried to put the ellipses inside of the planes, some are out of the planes but in general, they are in control. The Funnel shows that you put the ellipses in right place, the axis split them in half nicely.

In Rough Perspective, please remember to use ruler to draw the horizon line. In Rotated Boxes, the boxes look rotated in my eyes, that's good. In Organic Perspective, please remember to make the boxes that are closer larger and those far away smaller. Some boxes are small then the bigger is next to it then the smaller one come later, which make me confused. One tip is that you can imagine these boxes in this exercise are the same size. Just larger in one head of the swoopy line and they become smaller when it comes to the tail of the line.

And for all of the box exercises, please don't try to fix the lines, if it missed the point, than it missed, don't try to correct it. Correcting makes your work looks clumsier. Moreover, when you put hatching lines to the front-facing faces of the boxes, please also use Ghosted Lines method to do it neatly. These lines of yours look like you used your wrist to draw it hastily. As Uncomfortable said, it is optional, if you decided to do it, make sure it neat and tidy.

Next Steps:

As the purpose of the lesson 1, draw with confidence, so I want you to make some revisions. I want you to re do 1 Ghosted Line, 1 Rough Perspective, 1 Table of Ellipses, 1 Organice Perspective. Warm ups before doing exercise can help to improve your lines. Take your time to do many ghosted lines before the actual one can help too.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm trying my best to un-learn drawing from the wrist, and I think I'm getting better with practice. Ellipses are still proving to be a challenge. Also, I definitely missed the point of the organic perspective exercise the first time through, but this time it makes a lot more sense.

Here are the requested revisions.

I can see that your lines are improving, even it is still wobbly. Much it is much better than first time you did.

In Organic Perspective, now it is clear to distinguish the further boxes with the nearest ones. The Ellipses are better, it will be improved through time. Your Rough Perspective is really good in my opinion.

Next Steps:

I don't have anything else to say beside just practice with confidence and avoid wobbly. Now you can move on to 250 Box Challenge. Good luck!

PureRef

This is another one of those things that aren't sold through Amazon, so I don't get a commission on it - but it's just too good to leave out. PureRef is a fantastic piece of software that is both Windows and Mac compatible. It's used for collecting reference and compiling them into a moodboard. You can move them around freely, have them automatically arranged, zoom in/out and even scale/flip/rotate images as you please. If needed, you can also add little text notes.

When starting on a project, I'll often open it up and start dragging reference images off the internet onto the board. When I'm done, I'll save out a '.pur' file, which embeds all the images. They can get pretty big, but are way more convenient than hauling around folders full of separate images.

Did I mention you can get it for free? The developer allows you to pay whatever amount you want for it. They recommend $5, but they'll allow you to take it for nothing. Really though, with software this versatile and polished, you really should throw them a few bucks if you pick it up. It's more than worth it.
