In general, try to be more careful when reading the notes and completing the exercises. From what I can tell, some of the exercises seem a bit rushed and messy. One thing that stand out in particular is your marks tend to be quite wobbly. Really try to prioritize making smooth confident strokes even if they miss your intend mark instead of trying to be as accurate as possible and ending up with wobbly strokes. Uncomfortable explains it better than me https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/3/smooth. I'll also give you some feedback on some of the specific exercises.

Lines Section : There is quite a lot of fraying on both ends on the superimposed line exercise. Before making any mark try to pay close attention to where you want it to start and where you want it to end. Try to concentrate more on making confident lines rather than creating cool designs in the ghosted lines exercise. There are some repeating lines in the first page of the planes exercise but it seems like you fix this on the second page so good job on that.

Ellipses Section : I'd suggest rereading the notes for the funnel exercise. Make sure you draw through your ellipses and try to get their minor axis to align with the horizontal line you drew. If you're having trouble getting the horizontal and vertical line to be centered in your curves, try drawing the curves first and then drawing the horizontal line as centered as you can between them.

Boxes Section : Make sure to draw through your boxes in every exercise (except organic perspective where it's optional). Also keep the lines that form the front faces of your boxes horizontal and vertical in plotted perspective (don't rotate your boxes). It's cool that you experimented with other shapes in the plotted perspective type exercise but I would post that separately from the rest of the homework. You can do this directly on Drawabox by posting in your sketchbook.

Next Steps:

If you have the time, I would suggest you go over the whole of lesson 1. Personally, I've done lesson 1 twice and I don't regret doing so. You will probably benefit and learn more from redoing it than moving on to the next part of Drawabox even if it seems disheartening. If you're not up for the task then I would recommend you at least redo the following exercises:

  • Ghosted lines

  • Funnels

  • Ellipses in planes

  • Plotted perspective

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

I re-did the fundamentals and the above suggested. I'm planning on re-doing the missing exercises and then using my first credit on that later.

Also I forgot the last one was supposed to be done in pen, I'm still having trouble with the boxes so I think that's why I instinctively grabbed for pencil.

It looks much cleaner, great job! There is still a slight wobble to your lines, so try to keep in mind the idea that confidence is better than accuracy as you move on. Some tips that can help would be to practice using your shoulder as opposed to your wrist when you draw (for Uncomfortable's explanation on how to do this check out https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/2). No need to re-do the exercises again but do practice this during your warmups.

I'm a bit confused when it comes to the last exercise (the one you used pencil for). It's marked as plotted perspective but it doesn't seem like you used a ruler. Perhaps you confused it with rough perspective? Either way, here are the instructions https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/plottedperspective.

Don't worry too much about how good your boxes turn out for now, the most important thing is that you understand the exercise and follow the instructions to the best of your abilities. You'll get a lot more practice with boxes (and therefor more comfortable with them) once you start the 250 box challenge.

This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
