Hey, just finished lesson 2. Would really appreciate any feedback,

even a few words of wisdom would also be appreciated

Arrows: This exercise is great! There is not much wrong here. The only thing to look out for is that it looks like you tried to redraw a couple lines, making them look scratchy and messy. If you mess up a line don’t fix it and just leave it as is. But its not very prevalent so nice job.

Sausages: These look good! I notice that it looks like you outlined the circle shapes of your organic forms with a dotted line. Its not a huge deal, but it makes the final result look messier. I would try to avoid this for any sausage forms in the future. The other thing is that the degrees of your ellipses don’t increase as much as they should when they reach the ends of the sausage.

It needs to look more like this: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/061ed3b6.jpg

And not like this: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/6822fd02.jpg

I also notice that most of the sausages have only 3 ellipses, I would always go for about 5-6 ellipses. That will also help you with changing the degrees.

Texture analysis: On this exercise, it looks to me like you were outlining the forms of the texture with lines instead of drawing the shadow shapes, especially on the sea star exercise. You drew the shapes of the circular bumps instead of drawing the shadows that the circular bumps would have cast. Also, the transition between the black bar and the texture could be smoother and less evident, similar to this:

https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/7d1f3467.jpg

When you are filling in the shadow shapes, you should also be careful to make it all black and remove any white spots. It can be helpful to buy a brush pen to fill in these large blocks of shadow space, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Pentel-Brush-Black-Pigment-SESP15BPA/dp/B08NNPKD2D/ref=sr_1_7?crid=C9GX6GTXXR1P&keywords=black+brush+pen+art&qid=1658502996&sprefix=black+brush+pen+art%2Caps%2C280&sr=8-7

Dissections: Very solid work here! I can see that for most of these you correctly drew the shadow shapes instead of drawing lines, so good job. The only problem is that some of the textures do not wrap around the forms of the sausage quite enough. It is important to understand how the textures wrap around the forms because failing to do so will completely flat out the 3dness of the drawing. Here is an example:

https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/e58b7887.jpg

Its not a problem in every texture but there are a few that have this issue.

Form intersections: Great job, you understood the intersections pretty well especially considering that this is your first time. When you added line weight in some of the shapes, the lines got a bit messy and scratchy. Remember that every line you draw, even line weight lines should be drawn confidently and straightly in one stroke using the ghosting method. The other thing you missed that could be helpful is to draw through the intersections. What I mean by this is, let's say, a cube is intercepted with a plane in its corner. You draw the two sides of the cube that face the camera but forget the back side that is blocked by the ones in the front. It's not a huge deal, but drawing through the form intersections will help you understand how they operate more. I am not going to require it, but you can go back and draw in the back lines that you forgot, if you want.

Organic intersections: These have the same issues with the messy line weight in the form intersection exercise and the shadows that are not fully shaded like in the texture analysis exercise. Fixing the scratchy shadows and having smooth confident line weight will make your drawings a lot cleaner. Drawing line weight using the ghosting method can be a bit difficult, because the line might not adhere perfectly to the line under it which it is supposed to be giving weight to. With practice however, eventually you will be able to draw ghosted lines perfectly over the original line and you won’t need to rely on scratchy line weight.

Great job, time to take on lesson 3!

THANK YOU SO MUCH MY FRIEND!!! I'm so filled with joy that i was able to get a critique for this lesson, i often work in a vacuum with other courses, however karim ("uncomfortable") often tells us we shouldn't work this way and that it can be detrimental to our progress, so i'm constantly looking for critiques now Haha.

Reading the text it was super cool because of how you gave me steps to move forward and how i can improve.

I'll simply just come back to this in the future to become a better creator, when it comes to construction and texture.

And i will definitely be going to go back and outline those tricky construction lines i left out asap :)

Anyway thanks so much for giving me such a great critique i hope one day i too will be able to provide others with help such as this.

Have a lovely day my friend and best of luck with all your creative endeavors.

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
