Helloo, this is my Lesson 2 homework submission.

The dissections were pAiNFuL, and i made some mistakes on the organic arrows hatching, but anyways here it is.

Any feedback is appreciated!

PS: i know zebra it's not a texture, but i only realized this halfway through drawing it so i just kept it.

Hey hey, I will be reviewing your homework today!

But first of all congrats on making it through Lesson 2. Overall I think you did a pretty good job and I feel like you were able to grasp the essentials one those well. We’ll still go into details of course though ~

Arrows

Your lines are confident and smooth. There’s no real wobbling or attempts at correcting them. They’re getting bigger and bigger as they come closer to the viewer as well so in this aspect I think you nailed the assignment.

I might be mistaken but as far as I can see the lineweight is missing though. That’s okay, it can happen, but remember for the next time that the viewer has to be able to understand what's going on. The lineweight helps identify which line is in front of the other and helps sort the mess the eye sees. It’s nothing major, just something to look out for in future assignments and warm-ups!

In addition: I did notice your little question marks here and there. Don’t worry about the arrows not working out fully yet. With practise it will be easier to understand where the second line twists and turns. Still, to help visualize it, here’s an example:

Line 1 is the one I started with. To keep it simple here I started Line Two just a few mm next to the first one. So the line stays roughly the same, it just needs to move further away towards the end. So the turns should still be at the same height that the first ones are.

This will obviously not work with all arrows as they grow more complicated and twist and turn more but for the beginning, I hope this might help a bit.

Good job on this assignment though!

Organic Forms

For this one I don’t see any major issues. Your lines are smooth and confident here as well, ellipses are drawn through. The shapes are as described in the assignment (don’t worry about a bit weird shapes here and there). The degrees of the ellipses and contours vary according to how the viewer looks at the form and the ellipses are aligned to their axis line for the most part. As well they’re touching the boundaries of the sausage shape. The contour lines are hooking in. I don’t see anything I could complain about, great job!!

Texture Analysis

So the most important thing in this assignment is drawing cast shadows, not form shadows and for the most part I think you did that very well. This exercise is a hard one, I struggled with it as well so good job!

I still think this additional tip might help you in the future assignments where you’ll deal with texture more and more: https://i.imgur.com/M9JJfr4.png It’s simple, but effective, forcing you to think in shapes more so than in lines. I admit it’s hard to see shapes when you have something like paper, where the shadows are pretty straight forward but maybe it will help either way :)

The rest is pretty much secondary but I’ll mention it anyway. You did well on staying close to and being consistent with your shapes. No hatching or dotting, nice!

The transition from the texture into white works well but for the other site the black bar is very much visible when it was supposed to transition smoothly into the texture like a gradient. It’s a difficult thing to do but definitely something to keep an eye on next time around.

Like I said, great job overall though!

Dissections

This one is great as well. Textures wrap around the sausage form, you break the silhouette where needed and you’re drawing cast shadows. Good job! Yes, I forgive the zebra and also I’m impressed by the snake texture. It looks amazing!

Also yes, the dissections are painful, but I think you did great anyway.

Form intersections

For this one it was important to stay consistent with your lines, meaning placing confident lines, drawing through ellipses, ghosting lines, not repeating them, and so on and as far as I can see, I think you did well on that. Nice!

Organic Intersections

For this exercise it’s important that all the forms feel solid and supported, weighing down and holding each other up. You do succeed at doing so for some of them, others seem like they’re floating or about to fall off.

In this case it can help envisioning them like water balloons and trying to think how they would fall on top of each other. The forms described are our basic sausages from the Organic Forms exercise, but they do flop and flatten when lying against other forms.

I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it if you include this assignment in your warm-ups! Checking out already completed homework might help as well.

For the shadows I think you did very well, nothing really to say here, great! :D

I hope this helped you a little bit and I’d say you’re ready for Lesson 3! Good luck!

Hi!

I definitely need to be more careful about the stuff you mentioned. Thank you so much for your feedback and the tips!! (and your time).

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
