Hello, I'm new! I've been spending the last year trying really hard to learn to draw, but perspective has never clicked for me. Then someone suggested Drawabox, so here I am! Excited to try new things and be unafraid of messing up as I learn. Any critique or comments would be super appreciated! Hope y'all have a nice day :D

hello! I am new to critiquing people's work, so I am using the critique guide!

  • lines: There seems to be some fraying in your lines! It isn't present in all of them, so I assume that you are very capable of placing a good line. just be sure it's good to take your time! Your ghosted lines also look really neat and show a good level of understanding.

  • ghosted planes: ahhh this one is a tough one! though, due to how nice your ghosted lines were, the issue here might just be rushing and/or a lack of confidence. these exercises dont have a time limit, so take it easy! I see that you have re-done some of the lines; these exercises are meant to be difficult, though! That being said the planes themselves are organized very neatly :)

  • ellipses: great job on not "forcing" the ellipses and going over them the full two times! some may need some revisiting, but I am sure you are aware of those :) there seems to be some unevenness, and that could stem from either not "ghousting" properly, or not having the confidence while executing them or even drawing from the wrist. i ask that  you consider those but overall, they look great for the level that we are on (lesson one) !

  • ellipses in planes: there is some deforming in the ellipses. re-reading the "things to avoid" section could help https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/ellipsesinplanes/floating

  • funnels: some of these ellipses arnt drawn through fully( the ends dont meet meaning the pen was lifted too early or too late) . this seems to be a bigger issue here than the previous exercise, so it may be an issue of rushing or lack of confidence due to the complexity of the exercise.

  • rough perspective: oh boy I can tell you struggled with this one (its possible the most difficult here!) but overall, it is great!! the photos themselves were a little hard to read. the only major thing to note is redrawing lines, that isnt the main purpose of this exercise, but it can come about due to stress or a lack of confidence. Applying the "ghosting" method more thoroughly may help.

  • rotated boxes : good job with the rotation and tight spacing! not sure why there are 2 pages of the rotated boxes, though? the homework only states doing one.

  • organic boxes :some lines are redrawn and frayed. this might be due to rushing and not completing the "ghosting" method thoroughly, which would be something very important to note moving into the 250 boxes challenge.

Next Steps:

overall you have shown a real understanding of the exercises and their aim! Perhaps taking more time with the ghousting method and frequently cycling through these exercises as warmups would be very beneficial for you moving forward to the 250 box challenge. ( especially the funnel, planes and rotated perspective) I also loved the different colors you used and the general clarity in your work, goodluck :)

Thanks so much for this! I definitely know what you mean about the funnels and tables of ellipses — my struggle there was mainly that drawing from the shoulder is new to me, and when trying to draw smaller things it takes a lot of my brainpower not to draw from the wrist, and my arm gets all shaky and hard to control, so I falter in execution for sure. I'm working on it, though! I don't know why the funnels were so difficult for me but I'll definitely practice those more :) I don't think I fully understand how the ellipses in planes are meant to look, even after seeing examples, so I should get a better idea of the parameters there.

After I submitted, I went to critique someone else's submission, and only when reading the critique guide did I notice the bit about not correcting/drawing over the lines.... so whoops! I'm gonna try some of the exercises I did that with again and see how it goes. And you're right, I had SO MUCH TROUBLE with the rough perspective XD That's definitely something I gotta work on.

And oops, I must've misread or forgotten we only had to do one page of the rotated boxes! I'm glad I did though, cause doing it with color helped me actually keep track of which box was which (I was super confused with that the first time).

Great advice, thank you! I'll work on being patient with ghosting and getting better at shoulder control. Best of luck to you, too!

How to Draw by Scott Robertson

When it comes to technical drawing, there's no one better than Scott Robertson. I regularly use this book as a reference when eyeballing my perspective just won't cut it anymore. Need to figure out exactly how to rotate an object in 3D space? How to project a shape in perspective? Look no further.
