I know I feel lik it is rushed, but I tooked like a whole 3 weeks just to make sure to cover it as detailed as possible and understand the core fundamentals in this lesson. I have always drawn boxes, but this lesson really put my brain to total work, and it help a lot. After this I would do a 250 box challenge to see if I improve in draeing boxes. My biggest downside is drawing boxes without a ruler, it was kind of hard and perspective. I just really want some input to see if they came out alright.

Superimposed lines:

Generally good, most of the fraying is on the end of the lines. The lines themselves don't wobble too much either, so good job! One thing though - for exercises it's recommended to not draw on both sides (at least until you submit them, after which you can use the backside for warmups).

Ghosted lines:

A bit of wobble on some of them, remember that confidence > accuracy, so that's something to work on. But still, good for the most part.

Ghosted planes:

Similarly to ghosted lines, there's a bit of wobble present, but nothing major. I can also see a couple of repeated lines, try to avoid those. Still, good job!

Table of ellipses:

A lot of the tables seem to have quite some distance between ellipses, remember that ellipses in tables are typically supposed to touch either the frame or another ellipse at 4 points. Also a bit lacking in ellipses with low degrees. The ellipses themselves also are often drawn over more than twice, so try to avoid that.

Ellipses in planes:

Even more so than in previous exercise - the ellipses are drawn over way too many times. Remember that you are supposed to draw them over 2-3 times (and preferably 2). The shape of the ellipses seems to be good, not misshapen, though it's hard to tell due to the amount of lines. They are really smooth and confident though, so good job on that!

Funnels:

Similar issues to the previous two exercises. Also, the line is supposed to be exactly halfway between the curve so it can serve as the minor axis for the ellipses. There's also a decent amount of free space between ellipses on some funnels (as well as some being off-axis).

Plotted perspective:

Pretty good all around! The only criticism I have is that some of the vertical lines are not perpendicular to the horizon lines, but good job in general!

Rough perspective:

The boxes are drawn well, a little bit of wobble, however you didn't do the extensions to the horizon correctly. The way you are supposed to make them is to extend your lines as they are and see where they would fall on the horizon so you can see how off they are, rather than connect the corners to the vanishing point. You can see an example from the exercise here.

Rotated boxes:

I can see some confusion with rotation of the boxes on the edges, but it's to be expected at this point. So, well done here, though do keep in mind that to add line weight - one additional line is enough, you should draw over it more than that.

Organic perspective:

I can see you added weight to every boxes with couple lines - generally not something you should be doing. As for boxes themselves, they are mostly fine, some are a bit off with perspective and some are too big/small for where they are, but still good job all around!

Overall:

I think you need to work on repeated lines and drawing over ellipses - as in, try to avoid that. Ellipses should be drawn over twice (so there's 2 lines), boxes in general drawn with 1 line, don't repeat it no matter if it's inaccurate, and when you are instructed to add line weight, add with only one line. Other than that, keep working on getting those confident lines and make sure you don't draw at the backside of homework until after you submitted it.

Next Steps:

Before marking it as complete, I want you to do:

  • 1 page of Funnels - making sure that the line is directly between the curves (measure with ruler) and the curves themselves should be drawn using a circular object (such as a plate for example). The ellipses should be drawn over twice.

  • 1 page of Rough Perspective - making sure that you extend your lines until horizon and not lead them from vanishing point, more information is in exercise itself (which should be linked above).

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Steven Zapata's Secrets of Shading

Some of you will have noticed that Drawabox doesn't teach shading at all. Rather, we focus on the understanding of the spatial relationships between the form we're drawing, which feeds into how one might go about applying shading. When it comes time to learn about shading though, you're going to want to learn it from Steven Zapata, hands down.
