Post with 15 views. Drawabox Partial Submission Lesson 01

Name: Heroic

Age: 29

Job: Software Developer

2D Art experience: Zero

Hand dominance: Left

Why am I doing drawabox: To learn the basics and fundamentals of drawing. I want to take the some abstract ideas that are in my head and put them to paper. Things are perfect until they are real and I don't want to be an "idea guy" anymore. I have always been a fan of comicbooks, animation, and video game art, and I'd like to learn how to move from being a consumer of those things to someone who can appreciate the craftsmanship of it all. I'm doing this strictly as a hobby, but drawabox seems like the right type of structured program/system to learn things the right way.

What I hope to accomplish with drawabox: I hope to be able to understand visual communication and learn to draw shapes, figures, scenes, objects. Ideally I'd like to go from zero to hero, but realistically I'd like to go from zero to one and half. I see this as an opportunity to learn some virtues as well. Perseverance specifically.

Tools used:

  1. Pen - BIC Intensity fine

  2. Paper - Strathmore Drawing Paper medium surface

  3. Environment - Regular kitchen table.

  • (The pen and paper were on sale, that's the only reason I choice those items)

Please provide as much critique as possible, I don't take it personally I have had my ego ground into dust through code reviews and boxing training long ago. I'm eager to fail, because that's where we grow. Fail quickly, fail frequently, fail in new and exciting ways.

I tried to follow the video examples and the written as best as I could.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
