Distorted Circles

6:49 AM, Sunday December 12th 2021

My ellipses seem fine but my circles are very wobbly. Even after ghosting several times it isn't circular. I can't seem to assess the shape while ghosting unlike in lines where I know the start point and end point. How do I correct this?

Thanks!

Practice.

You could try creating a practice template with pre-drawn circles and draw over them to get your arm and pen trained in how it feels to draw a circle.

Ellipses probably seem a bit more forgiving as they are a less familiar shape ( hence it's harder to be critical of what you have drawn ) but that may be an illusion.

It takes a longtime to be able to draw these shapes confidently and you will probably go through the familiar plateau and sudden step up pattern that artists get used to. Improvement is not linear.

Vaish, how are your circles coming out now? Have you seen improvement in the last month? If you have, what do you think made the biggest impact in drawing more confident circles?

What comes to my mind is to make sure to use your entire arm (not just your wrist and/or elbow) and to practice regularly. Also, consider the speed at which you draw. If you draw too slow, no matter how much of your arm you use, the circles may come out wobbly still; and if you draw too fast, you may get smoother, more confident circles but you will sacrifice some accuracy. As Uncomfortable has said, smooth, confident strokes are a higher priority than accuracy is for beginners.

It has gotten better because of the warm-up exercises. Thanks for asking!

That's great to hear! Keep at it :)

Drawabox isn't the be-all, end-all of drawing fundamental education. Our approach prioritizes certain concepts over others, and while we believe it do so for good reasons, ultimately it doesn't appeal to everyone. If Drawabox simply doesn't work for you, give Proko's Drawing Basics course a try - at the very least, you'll probably find it to be a hell of a lot more fun.
