250 box challenge.

Started out rough but got better the more boxes I drew.

Hey there! First off, well done making it through the box challenge, it's definitely a bit of a slog but you did it and can breathe a sign of relief! :)

You're right in that you started off quite rough, your lines are confident to start with but you were clearly rushing the hatching on your boxes and not being particularly judicious with your line weight. This definitely tidied up as you went along with your line weight being more considered and not being applied to the internal lines of your boxes and therefore creating a better sense of solidity.

Your lines also started off pretty confident as it was but they are more refined and displaying more natural tapering as you go. I suspect that even by the end you could probably spend a little more time planning your lines but you've made significant improvement over the course of the challenge.

Similarly, your convergences steadily improve throughout and it's good to see you've experimented with a variety of different shapes, sizes, and foreshortening of boxes. I would've liked to have seen slightly bigger boxes with fewer to a page as this gives you lots of space to work through the spatial problems that boxes present. By the end, your convergences aren't too bad, particularly with the more extreme variations of foreshortening, though those with shallower foreshortening still show some issues where parallel lines are converging in pairs towards separate vanishing points.

We include this diagram with all 250 box challenge submissions. What this diagram is showing is how the angles of the lines of your boxes should relate to one another. You'll notice that the green and orange lines (the so-called "interior lines") are quite similar in angle so as to be almost parallel whilst those on the outer edges of the box are converging at a steeper angle. Try thinking about how these angles relate to one another when you practice your boxes in your warm-ups and beyond.

Congratulations on completing the 250 box challenge. Feel free to move onto lesson 2.

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
