Hey Draw a Box Community!

I hope you're keeping well.

This is my submission for the 250 box challenge, it truly was an exercise in patience, but I'm grateful for the experience and what I learned from it. I do apologize for the misnumbering and duplicates, I must've lost count when doing the work, I have tried to label each group as accurately as possible.

I'd be really grateful for any feedback and advice you could give, thanks for taking the time to look at my work, I really appreciate it.

Stay well!

Congratulations on finishing the challenge!

You have shown remarkable improvement in dot placement, VPs alignment and VPs placement. That alone means you can move on to lesson 2, but before you do that, I would like you to do 20 more boxes with these instructions in mind:

  • Your VP alignment, although has improved, is still inaccurate. When you try to align the (inner) corner with existing VPs or otherwise, you can ghost lines (without putting the pen down of course!) to figure out where to put the corners of the box/VP.

  • You can try drawing bigger boxes, as it does put you out of your comfort zone and force you to figure out how to draw boxes accurately. Placing dots with big boxes are actually harder than with small ones.

20 boxes ain't much, but it does help you get the hang of it!

Hey Monte_Cristo666!

Thank you so much for taking the time to critique my boxes, I really appreciate your effort. I will definitely do another 20 boxes ASAP. I really found the inner corners to be the most challenging, I'll try ghosting lines like you suggested and I'll definitely make some bigger boxes. Thanks again!

Hey MONTE_CRISTO_666

Hope you're well. Apologies for taking so long to get back to you, life has been a little mad lately.

Here is my revision for the 250 Box challenge, I tried what you suggested, the back corner is still giving me trouble. I'm going to try do some perspective exercises with a ruler and alternate between freehand exercises to see If I can get a better grip on it. Tygerson also gave me some fantastic advice to try as well.

Thanks again for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

Yeah you nailed them right. Congratulations! There aren't anything else to say really.

Next Steps:

You can move on to lesson 2.

Excellent improvement over the course of the 250 boxes! I'm working on that now.

One thing I've started doing to align stuff (which you might already be doing) is to use your pen to eyeball angles. I hold it right on the page and use it as a visual straightedge, sliding it around to estimate convergences of future lines. Then I pick it up and do the line.

On the back corner, I try to figure out how the longest line will align first, then find the point along it that works best for the two shorter ones. Then I place a dot and check all three lines before drawing them. (Sometimes it takes a few dots.)

Thanks for the advice,I really appreciate it!

I have tried using my pen to eyeball the angles it definitely is useful. Your advice on that back corner is really helpful! I'm gonna give it a go on the some more boxes for practice. I really struggled with it so I'm eager to give your advice a try! Thanks again!

Either the longest line, or the line that is going to be closest to one of the original "y" lines.

You know how sometimes you can see that one of the back lines is going to practically overlap with a front line? If that happens, you can just travel up and down it, keeping roughly parallel to that original "y", looking for the best spot that the other two back lines to intersect. Way easier than trying to simultaneously figure out all 3.

That makes sense to me, I never knew boxes would hold so many secrets. Thanks again for sharing your advice, I appreciate it, definitely gonna keep them in mind.

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
