Hi beautiful Mulfgang! I'm the beautiful stranger and I'll be giving feedback on your submission.

1. Lines

  • You start out pretty solid in Superimposed Lines as every line is overall smooth. Although there's a bit of shakiness/wobbliness, it is to be expected as you are just starting out. There's a variety of line types as well: short, medium, long, curvy so good job. However, it seems like you don't start out a line with a ruler first because some lines are arced downwards but I don't see a trace of a straight line (this is the most apparent on page "2/4"). Remember to start out every straight line with a ruler first and after that you can draw over it freehand 8 times. You should use A4-size papers as well because they will give you an opportunity to practice even longer lines that span across the width length of the page.

  • I can see an improvement on your ability to do ghosting as your first exposure to ghosting - Ghosted Lines are wobbly but that wobbliness is reduced by the time you do Ghosted Planes exercises. However, judging by your Ghosted Planes page, you are focusing too much on accuracy. Remember the three levels of ghosting. You must ensure your lines meet the requirement of level 1 first before tackling the next level. Although it is difficult to see, in Ghosted Planes it seems like you don't plot the dots for crossed (+) lines (see this page https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/15/step4). Remember to apply the ghosting method (plotting -> ghosting -> executing) for every straight line you draw.

2. Ellipses

  • You draw an ellipse more than 3 rounds. I see this mistakes occasionally from Table of Ellipses to Funnels exercise. Remember to draw an ellipse within 2-3 rounds and apply ghosting method as always to ensure your ellipses come out smooth & confident (see this image: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/a76a8906.jpg). And just like the Line section, you should always rotate the paper to find the most comfortable angle to draw ellipses. In Table of Ellipses, make sure an ellipse touches both the top & bottom bound of the frame as well. In page 1, the frame of the top left corner, your ellipses break out of the bound. In the same page, row 4 - column 1, your ellipses do not touch both top & bottom bound of the frame. In page 2 - row 3 - column 1, the ellipses do not have a consistent orientation (see this image: https://i.imgur.com/QVcJtmO.png).

  • In Ellipses in Planes, you are trying too hard to get your ellipses reaching all four edges. This results in two effects: (1) wobbly & uneven strokes, as you strive for accuracy over smoothness and (2) deformed, egg-shaped looking ellipses. I talked about this in another critique as well but the point can still be applied here (see this image: https://i.imgur.com/2NAQGKe.png).

  • In Funnels exercise, you should use a circular object to draw the curves instead of doing them freehand. When you do them freehand, the central minor axis does not cut the funnel into two symmetrical halves (due to inaccuracy in your markmaking) and no matter if ellipses align well with the minor axis or not, the minor axis still does not cut ellipses into two symmetrical halves. This is most apparent on the top two funnels. Ellipses align well with the central minor axis but the minor axis does not cut them equally.

3. Boxes

  • For Plotted Perspective, don't be afraid to draw through objects as if you have X-ray vision. Other than that I only see one mistakes in your submission so good job! In Rough Perspective, you place back planes of your boxes too close to the vanishing point. We are training our eyes to draw converging lines properly and the more mistakes you make, the more you learn from it. Placing your boxes too close to the vanishing point reduce the chance of making mistakes to/pretty close to 0 percent, thus no learning. In page 1 - frame 2 - you try to lengthen the box with new lines and sometimes you try to correct older lines with new lines as well (page 2 - frame 1 & 3). You are allowed to plot as many point as you need but the moment you execute the mark, you are unable to come back and correct your mistakes. This forces you to invest more time on a mark and slow down to think more carefully before drawing. Width lines should be parallel to horizon as well as I see width lines from back planes of your boxes become slanted in comparison to the horizon.

  • Pretty good attempt on Rotated Boxes exercise! On the cross section (+), except for two boxes on the right, the rest of the boxes rotate very nicely. In fact, only the some boxes at the edge/corner look off. The boxes near the cross section have very nice rotation. When you add line weight, only go over a line once because your line weight is thicker than it needs to. In Organic Perspective, the line weight is also too thick and you add them in unnecessary locations: the corner of boxes and the flow line. You use line weight to either show overlap between objects or to reinforce to shape so only add it around the silhouette of a box. You also skip step 1 of ghosting method (plotting) in this exercise too.

This wraps up my feedback on your submission. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me and I'll try my best to answer them.

Next Steps:

  • 1 page of Table of Ellipses + Funnels (Half a page is Table of Ellipses, another half is Funnels. Try to avoid all the mistakes I mention above when doing these exercises).

  • 1 page of Rough Perspective (Back planes of the nearest boxes should be far away from the vanishing point. You can watch the instruction video and see the example homework again for more examples).

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thank you for your feedback, beautiful person with the cakes!

Here's the revisions: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16eCu3eRwlI6vPtItogOLqgiSNR0R8EhK

Reading your critique, I noticed how I'd seemingly actually forgotten half the instructions to the rough perspective exercises by the time I got around to starting them.

2 notes: For the Ellipses in funnels I did use circular objects. Unfortunately, as I was finishing the one in the left corner, the cup I was using to draw the arcs slipped, that's why there's a curve and I redrew the lines and oriented all ellipses along those redrawn lines. Sorry it looks a bit messy.

For rough perspective, I know some of the starting rectangles will deviate from perfect horizontal/ perpendicular lines. Please mind, however, that I ghosted each and every line starting with dots and correcting those if necessary. It just didn't turn out perfect. But I kept in mind all necessary points as I was working through this. It also took me way longer than the first time around which should tell you something.

Thank you for going over my revisions and your feedback!

Good job on the revision! You have avoided the key mistakes I point out previously. With more practice you'll be to to draw ellipses much more smoothly and see improvement in Rough Perspective as well, especially since you are moving to the box challenge which is technically a more challenging version of this exercise. I didn't use Rough Perspective in my warm-up until I reached box 150 or so and it was a difference between night and day between each page.

You should feel free to move on to the box challenge. I suggest posting your boxes from time to time on DaB Discord server (especially your early boxes) to receive feedbacks from people so you can avoid making the same mistake unnoticed.

Next Steps:

  • 250 box challenge

  • Add Lesson 1's exercises into the warm-up pool

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
