I made a mistake and did the 250 box challenge, too. That's here. I'm not sure what I should work on while I wait for review.

Hey! That’s not ideal, but it’s not a huge issue. Definitely don’t start Lesson 2 until you’ve gotten it critiqued, though. Until then, feel free to do the other 50%, 100% of the time~ Let’s talk about this submission!

The superimposed lines look great! They’re smooth, start at the correct starting point, and maintain a consistent trajectory. The ghosted lines/planes are quite confident, too. I have 2 recommendation in regards to them. The first, is to be a little less conscious the end point. If you think back to the 3 levels, you’ll recall that hitting the end point is not something that we’re expected to be able to do immediately. So, rather than aim for it, to the extent that your lines become wobbly, simply ignore it, for the moment. It’s far more important for our lines to confident, insured. The second, is to plot start/end points for the non-diagonal center lines of the planes. They’ll help you solve the placement/perspective issue, and then, all that’s left is a simple, ghosted line.

The table of ellipses exercise looks nice, though there’s perhaps a few too many notes on the page. If you can, use a separate page for those- the extra practice is useful. Nonetheless, the ellipses are, for the most part, smooth, rounded, and of a consistent degree/angle in a frame. You could certainly push them further in all of those directions, but that’s alright. Try not to go around them more than 3 times, however. The ellipses in planes exercise looks good. There’s the occasional deformity, but that seems to be the exception, rather than the rule. Generally, your ellipses are confident, and circular. Finally, the funnels exercise looks great. You’ve been mindful of the minor axis, and, though a little too fast sometimes, the ellipses increase in degree as they move further from the center.

The plotted perspective exercise looks great, but you have 2 pages of it (the requirement is one.) I’ll assume that this was an accident, rather than intentional grinding (which, you’ll remember, is discouraged). The rough perspective exercise is, well, a little rough, but this is expected. The first issue is the slight dip in line quality. Remember that, regardless of the magnitude of the task itself, all we’re really doing is drawing lines- that’s our unit of work. If they can be confident in the ghosted lines exercise, they can be confident here, too. Outside of that, you’ve been mindful of your parallels/perpendiculars (though not always successfully), and your convergences improve considerably throughout the set- nicely done. The rotated boxes exercise is a little tiny. Drawing big is a sign of confidence, first and foremost, but it also provides us the room to be able to think about the different spatial problems we encounter in these exercises. As such, it’s encouraged. Outside of that, however, your boxes are snug, and rotate quite comfortably. Their back faces are sometimes a little off, but it’s of no concern- we’ve got a whole challenge dedicated to that. Finally, the organic perspective exercise looks fantastic. The shallow, consistent foreshortening, subtle increase in size, and all of the overlaps really aid its flow, and the boxes themselves look quite good, too. To take them even further, there’s the next step!

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
