## Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes

Lines

Your superimposed lines are confident and well executed. You've taken the time to line your pen up with the starting point, which has minimised fraying. Your ghosted lines and planes are exhibiting a similar level of confidence and they're pretty accurate to boot.

Ellipses

Your tables of ellipses are looking good. You've drawn through each of your ellipses twice and you've done a good job filling them tightly with ellipses of all different shapes and sizes. You're doing a good job keeping the ellipses tight up against each other for the most part, there are a few instances where they're popping out of their bounds a little but this should improve with practice.

Your ellipses in planes are generally well done with the ellipse hitting the four sides of the plane in every case however there's a few where you've ended up deforming them slightly, so make sure you're not focusing too much on accuracy in this exercise as it's definitely something that gets better with practice.

The funnels are off to a good start - the alignment of your ellipses to the minor axis is pretty good. There's a little bit of skewing, particularly towards the ends of the funnel where there's fewer tight guidelines to keep you straight. I did also notice a slight drop in line confidence here as well, so again, make sure you're not focusing too much on accuracy.

Boxes

Your rough perspective is pretty well executed for the most part. Your horizontals and verticals are generally parallel and perpendicular to the horizon line respectively. There are instances where you're not quite nailing them down but I suspect it's more of a mechanical issue than a conceptual one. Your estimation of perspective is pretty good - where it does stray, it does so in expected ways such as the boxes further from the vanishing point being less accurate.

Now the rotated boxes are definitely supposed to break your brain, as is the organic perspective. You've done a good job for the most part keeping the gaps between your boxes consistent, which gives you some great contextual hints about where to place your next box. You didn't manage a whole lot of rotation in your boxes, tending to follow the vanishing point of the box before it. As I said though, this exercise is supposed to be beyond your grasp at the moment, more intended to introduce you to a certain kind of spatial puzzle you may not have otherwise considered.

Finally, you're doing a good job conveying a sense of 3D depth in your organic perspective compositions with the overlapping of your boxes as well as variation in the size of them. There's some issues with divergence in your boxes however this is something that will become more obvious and that you can work on in the 250 box challenge.

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
