This is my first time doing any sort of art program that I actually wanted to do, and I think it went pretty well. Definitely had trouble with the rotated boxes but I think everyone did. Either way, I'd appreciate any feedback or criticism on how to improve for the next lessons and stuff!. Thanks!

hi,

Congrats on finishing lesson 1. First of all U did well some of those homework, but i think u hurry to much in late ones. Lines, Ellipses on planes, and even funnels goes pretty good. Ur 1 and 2 point perspective exercises also are acceptable. Unfortunately rotated box and organic boxes are not so good. Pls don't hurry so much, examine ur lines. Always try to use ghosting method, us will see where your line will end before U put mark on page. On organic boxes u could try simple form of that first line u need to draw. u shouldn't crossed itself and consider more like a line flow through space. Although those errors are acceptable on start, u should avoid them in later exercises. Unfortunately the rotated box are far too off what's needed to be done. Pls consider redraw this exercise. Read instructions again. Don't be hasty. the boxes should lay near each other and the lines of nearest box should be close to parallel. Good job and don't try hard. u don't need to do everything in one shot.

Next Steps:

Pls try redo rotated box.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi ok this is much better then last one. I hope that Ur lines will be more confident and smoother. Don't worry, this comes through doing more and more exercises and drawings. also remember about composition, try to use whole area of page to do the task. Now U can move on, as you want, but before lesson 2 try to do 250 box challenge.

Next Steps:

hi,

You can move on as U finish lesson 1 homework, next stop will be self critique exercise of 250 box challenge. Good luck with that. Remember to not be hasty, i did that one in about month. After that U will take lesson 2.

Cheers,

Szymon

I agree with most what Shins has said. Take your time and give each line the care it needs and deserves. You'll train your muscle memory and soon it'll come like second nature.

However, for the rotated boxes exercise: you shouldn't do this again just yet. In the exercise Uncomfortable suggests to move onto the 250 boxes, and then afterwards you have a choice of coming back to the rotated boxes with a clearer vision.

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
