This lesson is perhaps the most interesting yet to me. I feel like I got to know insects/arachnids by the kind of shapes they are. That'll no doubt help me for those kinds of shapes in general for such creatures. I felt like I was really seeing the 3D space now I've completed fully the 250 boxes. There is a subtle use of line weight here by using slightly different size to the pen rather than layering, trying to keep it immediately clean. Certainly starting with clear swooping organic forms pushes mistakes more to the internal shapes, which makes the drawing less jarring or inaccurate looking.

I did the 6 pages fairly big and a tad disorderly so I've merged them into a single image and aligned the references the best I could so it's easier to go through. I felt like texture was hiding possible mistakes so I've kept off of that mostly and tried to detail more with 3D shapes instead.

I'm admittedly an arachnophobe so avoiding the hairy textures helped me get through this but it's definitely fascinating how their shapes go and sausage shapes feel more friendly looking to draw. I found it worked best to do each segment of the legs outwards, which I figured is what the lesson implied. I tried some from the side, and while this is certainly less 3D it forced me to apply shapes in a textural fashion to imply it was curving away. I've also done one or two where I've only outlined the form and then tried to wrap shapes around that, like in the scorpion on the big page so I was somewhat toying with what I could eliminate but still describe the space with. I found this very informative.

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
