Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
12:34 AM, Thursday May 15th 2025
The first Ellipses in Planes paper is from the Ghosted Planes exercise. Have a wonderful day!
Hi ReallyCMK, congratulations on finishing lesson 1! I'm Kaili, I'm one of the other students in the course so this won't be official critique but hopefully it helps you out.
Lines
Superimposed Lines
Very good job filling out your page and experimenting with different line lengths and flows. My only critique here is to be mindful of your starts. Especially on your shorter lines, there's quite a bit of fraying going on which tells me there's a good chance you're not being super conscious of it. This is a really easy fix, though! Just keep it in mind as you start using these for your warm ups.
Ghosted Lines
Very good execution here, for the most part you're either coming very close to or dead on to your second point. The only thing I'd like to point out is once again your shorter lines. Your longer lines you're executing with a lot of confidence and it's clear you're drawing from your shoulder. Drawing from your shoulder on those shorter lines can definitely be tedious but it will really help you straighten out those wobbles and get more consistency during this exercise.
Ghosted Planes
No notes here! You did a fantastic job, just make sure you're ghosting those mid lines too for an accurate start and end point.
Elipses
Tables of Elipses
These all look very well done. Your spacing is very good, you're drawing through them twice, and, for the most part, you're hardly getting any wobbles. It's very clear you have a good understanding of this, so great job!
Elipses in Planes
Once again very well executed and very confidently done. There were a few that had a bit of a wobbley look, and a few more that didn't touch the edges of the planes, but that consistency will come with more practice. Good job!
Funnels
There were a few spots where your elipses were not placed correctly and did not touch the ends of the funnel, but for the most part you seem to be very confident in your execution. This is something else that, like youre elipses in planes, will become more consistent as you practice. Also, keep in mind you don't need to draw a bunch of elipses all over the paper! There were a few spots you could have added more funnels instead of elipses. I'd recommend doing what is assigned and nothing more/less. Comfy talks about this a lot throughout the course material.
Boxes
Plotted Perspective
I have no notes here, you executed these very well. Your work is clean, your back lines are coming out straight, and you're making good use of the space provided. Keep up the good work!
Rough Perspective
Very well executed. The back of your boxes are very clearly rectangular which is a good sign, however you Did not draw lines back to your vanishing point. This is really important to be able to properly critique your work, and is a necessary part of the exercise. Where he talks about this is linked here, please revisit this. . Also, make sure you are ghosting for this exercise as well. There seems to be a lot more error here than there was previously on your ghosted planes and ghosted lines exercise. Ghosting and drawing from your shoulder should be done for all assignments
Rotated Boxes
This exercise came out great: you rotated the boxes and didn't center them toward a VP, your lines through all of them are very clear and confident. Your spacing is consistent, but as you got toward the corners the rotations became less dramatic. The ability to execute this with confidence will come with time, but for now this is an excellent first attempt. Keep working at it!
Organic Perspective
My only critique on this exercise would be to increase the variation of the sizes of your boxes. Because there's not really a noticable size difference it's difficult to disitinguish which boxes are in the fore vs the background. It may be worth taking another look at the article and the example homework when you add these into your warm up pool.
Overall, these were very well done! As you go forward, make sure you're properly doing the rough perspective exercise, and be minfdul to ghost as many times as necessary and draw from your shoulder. Due to the rough perspective exercise not being completed, I am recommending you add your analysis lines to the VP before this lesson is marked as complete and before you can move onto the 250 box exercise. Make sure to read and watch the material thoroughly! It's very important for your DaB Journey.
Next Steps:
Add analysis lines during to your rough perspective exercise.
Here are my revisions! Thank you so much
Thank you for sharing your revisions! As the exercise is now completed and there isn't really any more feedback to add, I'm marking this homework as complete!
You are ready to move onto the 250 box challenge! Wish you luck! And feel free to check out the official DaB discord server if you have a chance! We'd love to see your progress and any 50% art you may be working on ^-^
Next Steps:
Move onto the 250 box challenge.
Do the lesson 1 exercises as your regular warmup and don't forget your 50% rule art.
Marco Bucci's got a ton of great courses available on proko.com, including some of the best videos you can find on using colour and light. Since a lot of our students want to break into working with digital painting however, I thought this course in particular would be a great start to get into the weeds with how to navigate the confusing world of layers, brushes, and more.
This course highlights programs across the full spectrum of options, ranging from the current industry standard Adobe Photoshop, to the Free-and-Open-Source darling Krita, as well as the mobile favourite, Procreate.
