Form Intersections question

I'm reading The homework for construction and I have a question about this section: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/8/step3 The issue is the cylinder. The ellipse on the left side of the image is larger than the other cylinder. To me the way the cylinder is positioned the ellipses should be reversed. I've included an image of my own to show you what I mean here: https://imgur.com/jhmWKLx. I guess I just think the ellipses are not the right size given the orientation of the cylinder.

I suspect you're just interpreting the orientation of the cylinder incorrectly. The far left of the cylinder is farther away from the viewer. The end facing the viewer is on the right side of the cylinder. Your correction changes this - it has the end facing the viewer on the left side instead, fundamentally changing what is being communicated.

The issue is simply that since we're drawing through forms, it's not as clear as to which end is which. For this reason, we need to rely on things we know - that the far end is always the one with the wider degree - to make sense of the image.

After taking a glass and putting it in the same position, I see it. For some reason my brain just has a hard time seeing it that way. it took a long time staring at the glass to see it.

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
