That side would be correct if I was trying to draw that cube from a top view. But it’s not it’s meant to be viewed from the top. I drew it to be viewed from a bottom view. Which is why the lines are extended the way that they are and why it’s shaded the way that it is. It just gives the illusion that it’s drawn from that top view because we have to draw through the boxes. The top square of cube 8 is not the side facing the viewer it’s the transparent back of the cube. The bottom square of cube 8 is the side that is facing the view..

This is what 3 and 8 would look like if they where not drawn through.

Ohhhh, I understand now! I should have looked at how the lines were converging. I'm sorry I wasn't getting it at first. You should shade the side that faces the viewer; that's how to easily tell how we're supposed to see it. That said, even looking from a top view, the lines are still extended in the wrong direction

It should look like that

No it shouldn’t. That is the back of the box that you shaded. The box is supposed to be viewed from the bottom. The side you shaded would be invisible to the viewer if not for the x ray vision of the cube. The lines would be extending in the wrong direction if it were from a top view I agree. But agin this cube was draw to be from a bottom view which would make the lines correct.

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
