This was certainly a challenging lesson, especially the intersections, but hopefully what I've produced is acceptable for my level if not actually good.

I appreciate any critical remarks, and don't be afraid to let me have it if I slip up on my fundamentals anywhere.

Hey Mecha! Congratulations Mate. you did a Awesome job on completing this lesson with lots of focus, energy and time. be proud of what you have Accomplished.

Hello! Its me Again. I hope Its not a problem to Allow me to View your Submission and offer Insights on it as well.Kind of excited and also nervous but I will try to be best and helpful as possible. So without any further Ado Lets start Jumping In;

A- The praises ( the job you did well in the particular exercise)

B- Where It went slightly off( where you should keep an eye on)

C- What you can do or remember to improve on in future warm ups

Starting from your ARROWS:

A- The Arrows are flowing smoothly and Confidently and It feels like they are Exploring the depth of the vast 3D space instead of just 2d flat Page. so Good job on selling that lie to the viewer.

B- There are times Where you sometimes hesitate while drawing the smooth Curved lines of an Arrow resulting in a Slow and wobbly Lines. So this is the Issue that needs to be Avoided as best as Possible in the Warm ups By being Confident and drawing from our Shoulder.

There are spots where your arrows bulge/narrow suddenly, this is an issue because it gives the impression that your arrows are stretching which hurts their solidity.( like we can mainly see on your second page of Arrows). Sometimes the perspective of your arrows are slightly off. Like the space between the sucessive folds compress less when it reach towadrs the viewer instead of getting bigger and bigger.

https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/0f7c806c.jpg

Here Take a look ate this: https://imgur.com/Rnajl9h. I did draw over your work to show some of the Issues you are facing.

C- (I think Its better to avoid those Spiral arrows and just focus on simple S curves .later after you are much more confident in creating a simple arrows that flows through 3d space, you can Experiment and have fun with them. )

Yes It’s a lot difficult to do than saying- so we advise you to build the second similar curve in part by part or you can plot some points along the path of second curve and ghost several times and execute to your best. Always remember as the arrows appear closure to the viewer their space and thickness increases more and more like shown in this Image: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/011d064f.jpg

another Thing I want to Remind here is about the line weights: Line weights are the important tool to use Whwn to clarify the overlaps between the folds. Use them with care ( be subtle with them only one extra line is preferable). Yes they should be ghosted and drawn with confidence and shoulder. If you sometimes hesitant while applying them Then they will become wobbly and messy so be mindful of it

Now Moving on to ORGANIC FORMS:

A-I think you are not fallen into the category of complicating your Forms so good job on keeping your organic forms simple ( The characteristics of simple organic form is like – there will be Two identical balls which are connected by a tube which can be manipulated in any ways).

I appreciate that the Ellipses are drawn with concrete or real goal in mind meaning - taking time to plan where your ellipses sit before executing and striving to keep them within the Bounds ,Aligning to spine of form and increasing their degrees as they travel through the form so thats good.!

B- But you are fallen into the trap of Executing your ellipses and curves in a Accurate manner thereby some of your ellipses and curves look wobbly and Uneven. So we advise you that if you are so much cared for Accuracy, leave it there for sometimes and focus on Creating a smooth, even ellipses confidently from your shoulder and later After building some Mileages with them you can work on Accuracy as well.

Sometimes your forms get a little bit complex like the balls are squished( like they form sharp curve at the ends) instead of being identical ( we can see on organic forms page 2) so yes try to think them as a identical ball connected by a tube of constant width.

C- -Yes You should try your best to hook the contour lines around the organic forms, while also aligning to the minor axis and also be mindful of their degree shift . My little suggestion is to Experiment and have fun with them in your warm ups. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/368871002584907776/867744968432549928/QTEqgJa_1.png

Always remember- By being confidence and executing or Marks from the Shoulder We can able to Create Smooth, Appealing Marks in our Work.Yes it Take some time to develop that kind of muscle memory so be aware of it in your Warm ups.

Jumping on to THE TEXTURE ANALYSIS:

A- Wow good job! On focusing mainly on the cast shadows.

B- There are times where you dis focus on the lines Instead of Cast shadow Shapes like we can see on the leaf texture. This makes it difficult to create gradients with implied information which we could then use to create focal points in more complex pieces, by doing so we can prevent our viewers from being visually overwhelmed with too much detail. For more on the importance of focusing on cast shadows read this article https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/6/notransition

I can say you did a good job on conveying your textural information to the viewer in the form of Gradients from densely packed to sparse so this will help our viewers eye to move freely( its is called working Implicitly) . but there is still you need to exaggerate the shadow shapes when they move toward the densely packed sides therefore making the black bar not visible.

C- I would like to show this Image https://i.imgur.com/M9JJfr4.png

In this Image It explains why we have to focus mainly on shapes rather than outlines or simple lines. So by focusing mainly on shapes we can create interesting and more dynamic textural info rather than simple lines.

I’m confident that your analysis will be much more Improve after completing the 25 texture challenge. Its an optional though

Now THE DISSECTIONS:

A- Nice work here also you did a good job on wrapping your textures around the form.

B- Sometimes you did seem to rely on memory instead from observation thereby creating some Cartoony texture. I'm not fussing over it, I'm confident that these will Improve If you are Aware of your Mistakes in the future attempt of these Exercise.

So we advise you to always Take the time to observe more of your subject rather than your drawing ( it should be 90% observing your reference and 10% observing your drawing)

This issue is present in a little, but still I’ll mention It. (There are minor times where you are not taking the chance to break the basic silhouette of the organic forms .You have a great opportunity to convey your textural info,so we advise you to take that opportunity and break your basic silhouette because this is the first info where our eyes will draw.

C-How you can Improve them: so first always be mindful of your curvature and wrap your textural forms around it. Second try your best to focus mainly on the cast shadows ( not the outline of form) and how they affect the surrounding forms. Third arrange your forms in the form of gradients ( in this Exercise assume there will be light focused on the central part of organic forms) here there be will be sparse in the central portion and more dense near the silhouette.

The dissections and texture analysis are the qite challenging and most difficult Exercises. You did a nice job on completing the recommended amount of pages. If you wish you can include them in warm ups ( 10- 15 min that’s all ) and do a small portion of it to Improve further.

THE FORM INTERSECTION:

  • Good job on your Intersection Mate! but again The issue of not Confident in executing your marks is still present here and some of the boxes are not drawn through.

  • It would have been better if you had kept your forms Coherent, cohesive and resembling that they share the same scene( shallow foreshortening boxes).because It increases the complexity of the foreshortening in the scene and is going to distract you from the main focus of the exercise.

  • It would have been better if you had include more network of forms in your last page to solve more complex Spatial problems. https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/8/smallgroups

  • Another small thing to remind you here is that the Hatching lines on the boxes should be done diagonally .its not a big of a deal but be mindful of it next Time.

  • There is some hiccups in the Intersections. Since its not much the focus of the exercise I can say that you are on the right track. Use Our community support member ( Optimus) First Aid pack on Intersection which is available on the draw a box discord server # lesson 2 pinned Messages. It’s a wonderful guide for all of us.

moving on the last Exercise:

A-The Organic Intersection is done very well. Again good job on keeping your forms simple. I can say that you are thinking about them as water balloons which have mass and volume to them.

B- In a very minor Times your forms feels a little bit rigid. So yeah continue to think about them as a water balloon that can sag and bend when it dropped on the other similar form. be mindful of their Curvature also.

Now coming to Important point :

Of course you had done great job on putting lots of focus, energy and time in completing this lesson so hats off for that. but there are things I feel like that you need to improve on them some more. I just want to bring you to the right path so Unfortunately I'm asking for a revision of only one page.

THE REVISION: WHAT ARE THE REVISION?

ONE PAGE OF ORGANIC FORMS ( Include both the Types ellipses and Curves).

ONE FILLED PAGE OF FORM INTERSECTION ( include All the forms if you like).

Total of two pages.

HOW TO TACKLE THE REVISION?

Keep in mind the Above mentioned points over there and work towards that goal. Try your best as you can but don't expect perfectionism!

first priority= Executing with confidence

second priority=even if we have to sacrifice accuracy We should always continue to use ghosting method, drawing from shoulder and make sure that We are always use our arm to get the best flow as possible.

Here are some of the useful links:

Organic forms:https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/contourlines

INTERSECTION- Form Intersection: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/formintersections

you can go over the lecture content and video to get better understanding of purpose of exercise

The point of this revision is not to expect some wonderful works but instead its just to remind you what you should be focus on while working toward these exercises.

understand the materials at your own pace and execute to your best. . so I believe that you will take my feed back to the heart and work with it.

I'm awaiting to your response. have a nice day!

Thank you MECHA!

Next Steps:

THE REVISION:

  1. A page filled wit the organic forms

  2. A page filled with the form Intersection.

  3. Having any questions related to this feed back. Feel freee to ask in the reply section or ping me in the draw a box discord server.

THANK YOU!

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi Chiran, thanks for the detailed critique.

I've done the revised task as requested. They're available at the same link as the initial batch under the names "Scan 13" and "Scan 14". I think I did better on the intersections this time, though I'm still not executing my ellipses perfectly, and it's very easy to get timid and put shapes too far away from each other.

Let me know if these are okay.

5:40 AM, Tuesday September 14th 2021

Excellent Mecha!. Yep these are done better compared to the Earlier Submission.

Okay Lets Take a closer look and Analyze them.

  1. ORGANIC FORMS:
  • the forms looks Simple and solid. the Ellipses and Curves are aligned to the minor Axis and their degree changes respective to their position. This is what we need. so I can say that you did a great job on these ones.

  • The main issue still present in this assignment is that the Ellipses and Curves are not Drawn Confidently. you are still thinking About the Perfection here.

I'm still not executing my ellipses perfectly,

My advise is that we should leave that Thought Aside for now and just focus on Executing a smooth, confident marks from our shoulder without thinking about perfection. although the Accuracy is our End goal which takes more time and practice so we advise you to give first priority on executing a confident strokes.

  • just a thing to mention here is that, if you are having trouble drawing and keeping the sausage forms (like a 2 same balls connected by a tube of constant width). you can either Increase the times of ghosting or you can put some few dots along the path of sausages and ghost them over a few times and draw over them with confidently.

  • another thing I want to remind you which It may help in the future is- Loosening up your shoulder while drawing those ellipses. Don't get too stiff with your shoulder while Executing, just loose up your shoulder and feel the motion while Executing.

  • In Conclusion we can say that the deformed ellipses or uneven and wobbly Ellipses are either be a result of using wrist to draw those or by giving the perfection the main priority.

So from this we learnt that.

first priority= Executing with confidence

second priority=even if we have to sacrifice accuracy We should always continue to use ghosting method, drawing from shoulder and make sure that We are always use our arm to get the best flow as possible.

Now Moving on to 2. FORM INTERSECTION.

  • Yay! it much better now. You did a great job on keeping your forms kept your forms Coherent, cohesive and resembling that they share the same scene( shallow foreshortening boxes).

https://imgur.com/undefined. this is my little correction on your work.

  • To avoid sharp curve at the major axis in ellipses( like a egg shape or bendy ellipse) Its advisable to rotate your page to find the comfortable angle of approach and start and end ellipses at the minor axis( the axis which divides the ellipses into symmetrical halves)

  • There is some hiccups in the Intersections. Since its not much the focus of the exercise I can say that you are on the right track. Use Our community support member ( Optimus) First Aid pack on Intersection which is available on the draw a box discord server # lesson 2 pinned Messages. It’s a wonderful guide for all of us.and keep practicing with it in your warm ups.

My point of View:

overall You did a good job on your Revision. Keep up the good wok Mecha!. I'm confident that you will improve much further In the future by keeping in the mind the mistakes in your Warm ups.

so yeah I'm allowing you to move on to Lesson 3 by marking your lesson as Complete.

Hurray! we made It. Congratulations on Completing the lesson 2. I hope this feedbacks helps. Have a wonderful Artistic Journey Ahead. I'm awaiting to see your progress throughout

Thank you MECHA!.

Next Steps:

WHAT NEXT?

  1. You are free to move on to lesson 3

  2. set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes- know your goal , be conscious of your mistakes and fight for 10 or 15 minutes in warm ups. be as perfect as you can but don't expect perfection!.

Thank you!

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
