I joined the two assignments of Ghosted Planes and Ellipses in Planes together, I hope that's fine. I'm really nervous to send this homework, but I do wanna improve so I have no other choice. Thank you all for enabling me and so much people to be able to study art. I will try my best to support you all as much as you do for other people.

Hello Iwuzhal, I'm here to review your submission and give you feedback and tips to improve even more. =)

I'll split the critique into three sections (Lines, Ellipses and Boxes) and then I'll write a more general comment about the entire lesson.

Let's get started, shall we?

Lines

Starting with your Superimposed Lines, your lines are wobbly and sometimes frying on both sides. Frying on one side is ok but if they're frying on both sides, it means that you aren't taking your time to place your pen at the starting dot. Don't rush to get the exercises done. There still are a few lines that are confident, which is what you should be aiming for. :)

Moving on to Ghosted Lines, your page is kinda empty and you could have made more ghosted lines but that's not a big deal. The lines here are actually really good (most of them). They're confident and aren't arcing (most of them again). It is true that you overshot most of them but for the moment, it's not a problem at all. Keep focusing on confidence over accuracy!

Finally, onto Ghosted Planes, while it is totally fine to reuse the ghosted plane exercise to also do the ellipses, it would have been nice if you had taken a photo of the planes before you drew the ellipses. The planes themselves look fine and the lines still are confident but some of them were a bit wobbly too. I noticed that you forgot to place dots to ghost your line for the "cross". You should also have placed dots here too.

Ellipses

I can see that you were struggling with your first few ellipses but you quickly got the hang of it! They usually touch the borders of the frames which is good and you also usually drew through your ellipses two to three times but there are some instances where you only drew through it just one time and where you drew through it 4 times. Two to three times is fine with two being even better. They lack a bit of confidence though. Most of them are a bit wobbly or shaky.

Drawing the ellipses on planes seemed to be harder for you. Your ellipses don't have to deform to fit inside the plane. The center of the plane doesn't have to be the center of your ellipse! Try to ghost more times before drawing your ellipses or maybe increase a bit more the speed at which you draw them. Having a wobbly ellipse that touches all 4 sides of the plane is useless most of the time. It's better that your ellipse is confident and round (even if it only touches one or two sides of the plane - Confidence is always more important than accuracy).

Your ellipses look better on the funnel exercise but there still is room for improvement. There are wobbly ellipses here and there but this time at the smaller degree.

Boxes

For the Plotted Perspective, everything seems alright to me. The layout that you used to place 4 frames was a bit odd though. It's a bit harder to draw on the smaller frames but besides that I think it is OK. Even so, I recommend you to use the same layout as in the example (page on the vertical - 3 frames with the same dimensions)

On the Rough Perspective, overall you did a good job too. The lines still are wobbly here and there but nothing major. Also, there are some lines that should be perpendicular/parallel to the horizon line but aren't... I think you were actively trying to avoid to make that mistake but there were a few instances were you couldn't "stop" from making the mistake (Ahh... I'm struggling to phrase this). Your extended lines usually stopped near the vanishing point. Nice job on that!

Your Rotated Boxes looks great! I think you started your exercise with a box too small and as a result, the entire drawing ended up too small. Applying line-weight and hatching the visible sides of the boxes would have helped making your drawing cleaner and more pleasing to the eyes.

Finally, the Organic Perspective exercise, you did a good job here too! The boxes are rotating and the flow feels good too. Yet again, applyying line-weight would have helped your exercise look more clean. Here's a guide that I wrote to help you with that. (It's not the main objective of the exercise so you don't have to do that if you don't want to)

In summary:

You did an amazing job overall and you improved a lot since you first started - especially your lines! Keep working hard and never forget that confidence is more important than accuracy.

I would easily mark your submission as complete but there is a missing page of Superimposed Lines. If you just forgot to post them, reply to this critique with a link to the photo, otherwise do the second page and also reply to this critique with a link. =)

After that, I'll mark your submission as complete.

If possible, on future submissions, could you place all photos of the exercises in the correct order? Needing to scroll up and down all the time to compare two pages and to find the next exercise is a bit tiresome...

Next Steps:

Send me a photo of the 2nd page of Superimposed Lines.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

First of all, thank you for the critique! I realized a lot of stuff that I wouldn't have came to me if someone hadn't told me outside the box. About the superimposed lines, I dug through the folder where I keep my assignments and I couldn't find the other page, so I re-did the assignment.

I'm sorry you had to deal with my disorganisation, I promise to keep it neat the next time. https://imgur.com/a/obeQOZg

I did realize I was making a lot of unconfident lines, curved ones especially. I'll do my best to work on it and actually take the time to absorb the information that I'm trying to learn, again, thanks for the contribution.

Thank you for sending me the second page of Superimposed Lines! I now can mark your submission as complete! =)

I don't know if you're already doing it but you should always do warm-ups before doing DAB exercises each day. You pick 2 or 3 exercises at random and then you do them for 10-15 mins. If you feel like you're struggling at a specific exercise, you can do that one more often during warm-ups but you should still do the easy ones too.

Your next step is the 250 Box Challenge. I'll give you some useful tips so you avoid some mistakes that some people do when they first get started.

  • Do 3-5 boxes per page and draw them big (you can look at my profile and look my latest boxes to have a clearer idea on "how big" they should be)

  • Extend the lines in the correct direction (you extend them from the initial Y)

  • Do at least one box per day (this challenge takes a long time so every box counts! - Also, don't do the opposite and overwhelm yourself with too many boxes per day)

  • Hatching while optional helps a lot and you'll see by the end of the Challenge how much better your lines are

  • Try different angles! - This challenge isn't about drawing a perfect box from a specific angle but to understand how do they rotate in space and how the perspective and vanishing points work

  • Join the DAB Discord server - if you post your boxes as you're doing them people will certainly point out any mistakes that you're doing and will offer you amazing tips!

That's all I had to say. Take care! =)

Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 Box Challenge.

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Your kindness is a blessing to this community, thank you for not only helping me but others as well. I wish you the best!

I'm already done with the 250 boxes, I'm starting with lesson 3 so I don't know how to put this in other words >.>

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
