Hi. Your work is pretty good but there's some things I want to point out - let's get straight into it!

For lines, your work here is pretty good. I can see that you've put a lot of efforts in your super imposed lines and ghosted lines. however, there's a bit of wobble, especially in longer lines. To solve this, you can ghost more, and remember to prioritize confidence over accuracy. I noticed that your accuracy here's pretty good, so try to keep that in your mind. Also, I can see that for some lines, especially long ones, they are a little bit curved. That may be cause by not using the shoulder pivot, but even if you used the shoulder pivot, it can still happen. If this is the case, you can consciously try to arc the line in the opposite direction. Otherwise, you work in this section is very good.

As to ellipses, they are pretty accurate, but just as I mentioned in the lines section, you need to pay more attention to getting confident ellipses than accurate ones. Remember to ghost more and don't fear to make mistakes - they are pretty hard for a beginner, so making mistakes is very normal. You seems to have understood other parts of the lesson quite well. But again, I can't stress this enough - aim on making your linework confident more than making them accurate.

Finally, boxes, you clearly have understood the underlying theory behind boxes. But just like I mentioned in the ellipses and lines section, ghost your lines, and make sure they are confident. For the rough perspective exercise, I noticed that your lines are pretty wobbly. These are supposed to be done by plotting the starting and end position for each line and then ghost, and draw the line you plotted down confidently. For the rotated boxes, although it have fell apart in quite a few places, a portion of your page showed that you have clearly understood what is the goal of this exercise. For the organic perspective exercise, I noticed that you made some perspective mistakes in the exercise, but that doesn't matter - we will work on that in the 250 box challenge.

So, all in all, your work is great, expect the fact that your lines are not confident enough throughout. So, to provide you a chance to experiment with more confident lines, I'll assign you a page of ghosted planes. Good luck with them!

Next Steps:

1 page of ghosted planes.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Greetings,

First of all, I'd like to give you my thanks for the comprehensive feedback. It's great so be able to interact with someone in the community willing to provide some meaningful insights.

On that note, in the spirit of addressing your comments, I've done the Ghosted Planes exercise that you had assigned me do in addition to the rest of my submission. Please refer to this link to have a look at my work.

That's great! While some part of it still seems pretty wobbly, I can definitely see that your confidence in lines improved a lot, and you have definitely understood what is being required to understand in this lesson. Congratulations on completing lesson 1 and good luck on your 250 box challenge! Feel free to ask for agrees in the discord community.

Next Steps:

250 Box Challenge.

JugglingSalmon accidentally hit 'Report' instead of 'Reply'. Here's what they meant to say:

Thank you! Again, I sincerely appreciate the advice you've given me. I will most definitely be looking into using the breadth of your comments as I move forward tackling the rest of the lessons. On that note, given that I need another agreement from someone else in the community, I will indeed be having a look at getting a response from Draw A Box's Discord channel. I wish you the best in your learning journey and do hope that you continue to give newcomer's like myself fruitful advice in the coming days.

Maybe I should move the report button somewhere else...

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
