May I use a fountain pen?

9:33 PM, Saturday January 22nd 2022

Rather than buying a bunch of fine-liners, would it be alright if I used a fountain pen to complete the DAB exercises? My pen makes very fine, clean lines and doesn't permit any shading, only cross-hatching. I do plan to submit my work for official critiques.

Thanks for any insight.

Any work submitted for official critique requires all the rules to be followed. This includes using fineliners.

See here, there are good reasons.

hej i research the same thing. my concern is waste of plastic. so my choice is what is called rapidograph where i live. it looks like a fine liner, they are produced in 0.5 width (among the others) that we need and have your regular fine liner tip. difference is they are refillable with ink. basically it might be found where you live by the name refilable fine liner.

or a manga calligraphy pen, that I might buy and try, but not sure if it is right. anyways, my 5 cents

Hi Kurchatko,

That's great to know. I'd never heard of a refillable fine liner. I also have the same desire not to waste plastic. I am finished with Drawabox for now, but I was going through so many ball-point and ink pens that I could not refill; I started to think there must be a better way. My first interest was Muji pens because they actually sell refills. I quickly discovered that Muji also sells a fountain pen, and that launched me into a frenzy of research for the best budget fountain pen.

I now use a fountain pen as my primary writing instrument whenever possible. Noodler's Black is the only ink I use; if I had a second pen I would probably get a Flex nib with fun-coloured inks. The nice thing about a fountain pen versus a refillable fine liner is that the metal nib of a FP is more durable than a FL and rarely if ever needs replacement; though it is much nicer to only replace the nib on the FL rather than the whole pen.

Get a good FP and a good nib, and you'll only have to buy ink for many years. I recommend getting a FP that is "hot-swappable" (i.e. it's easy to swap the nib out for another one); for a nib I have fallen in love with Fountain Pen Revolution's chrome EF nib; be mindful of your pen's nib size when buying nibs.

Thanks for your 5 cents :) All the best.

Orconomics by J. Zachary Pike

This is one of my favourite books. It's a fantasy-comedy romp, and the world that J. Zachary Pike has created honestly takes my breath away. There are laughs at every turn, but the story is not without its heart wrenching moments - some for which I have yet to fully forgive the author.

If you're at all curious about the kinds of nonsense I read, or just need something new to sink your teeth into, this is one I can highly recommend. On top of that, being self-published by an indie author, it's the kind of thing where your individual support can go a long way.

P.S: The audiobook, with narration from Doug Tisdale, is especially good, and elevates the story in ways I can't rightly describe.
