I did most of the lesson with fountain pen and/or ballpoint. I used fineliners for the last couple since they had finally arrived. This is also my second pass at the lesson. I started in October and restarted in December.

Hey there Monkeeboom, I'll be taking a look at your submission today!

Lines

You did good in superimposed lines. The lines look smooth and drawn with a flow. There is fraying on one side of the lines but, that is to be expected and gets better with time and practice by cognitively drawing with your shoulder

In ghosted lines, you can try drawing much bigger lines to challenge yourself. You are missing the end points of lines in some cases, but accuracy is a second priority confidence and flow in lines always comes first.

The Ghosted planes look decent.and it shows that you've understood the concepts and followed the instructions that were told, so good work!

Ellipses

In your tables of ellipses, I spot considerable amount of wobbles. Just like with lines, the ellipses must be drawn confidently, prioritizing confidence and smoothness, over accuracy.([something like this])(https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/f4181ea2.jpg) It does however get better with the next exercise and I'm happy to see that, but it could still use some improvement.

More ghosting before putting down the stroke also might help you with wobbliness in your curves

same comment for the ellipse in planes and funnels (you can also try drawing funnels with varying sizes)

Also, if you ever feel like challenging yourself with the funnels, you could try to increase the degree of the elips the more you move outward of the center, like described here

Boxes

You did the plotted perspective exercise as instructed - not much to add here

The rotated boxes look good. I noticed that there are some boxes that could use a little more rotation,

some of your boxes are sharing the same VP. see here (mostly with your boxes on the left side)

but you kept your linework consistent and the lines look smooth and confident. so good work!

In organic perspective exercise, I can spot [wobbles in your lines]https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/5bcda336.jpg). The boxes that are coming towards the front side should be drawn bigger as compared to the back ones to sell the illusion of 3D.

There are some boxes that have some issues with the convergences of the lines, but that is something you'll get more used to when doing the 250 box challenge.

You did a great job overall in this lesson and understood most of the concepts. However I don't think you're quite ready to move on.

Next Steps:

  • 1 page of tables of ellipses exercise

Just like with lines, the ellipses must be drawn confidently, prioritizing confidence and smoothness,

over accuracy. Good luck!

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Here is my new page of Table Of Ellipses. I made a point to work from my shoulder so let me know how it went.

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
