Please start at the bottom and move up to the top of the album if you want to look at these in the order that I did them.

This assignment was obnoxious but well worth it, I got impatient at times and I put more boxes on the pages then recommended for many of the pages. There are some pages at the beginning in the middle and at the end that only have 5-6 boxes on them. I revisited the assignment about halfway through and started shading and reinforcing the lines at that point, the early stuff might be a bit more confusing for that reason. I deviated at times a little from the instructions about the red line in order to explore how far I was off and help me to understand the shapes of the boxes and where I'd gone wrong better. Honestly I think he should suggest that you do that a bit becuase it was invaluable in my learning process. Now a few observations:

  1. If you have misalignments on the angles of the outer lines, it can be literally impossible to place the last point (that the last three lines connect to) in a way that works in relation to all three sets of parallels even reasonably well.

  2. The inner 2 parallels in a set are much harder to line up than the others because the tolerance is ridiculously low. The convergence can be tremendously off with position changes of less then a 1/4 of a mm.

  3. Unless the lines you draw are perfectly straight and even thickness, especially impossible with reinforcing the outer lines, there is a significant amount of variability in reasonable interpretations of where the red line goes while following that line. Two points related to this.

    A. Early on especially I found it more reasonable to trace those lines from where I intended to place them rather than where they ended up (since I could already see the error in not drawing them as intended and needed to hon my intution clearly in terms of deciding where I wanted to place them without the additional noise of my lack of control in drawing the lines.

    B. It wasn't always entirely clear exactly how I should align with my own lines (in the minutae) and the difference between interpreting that one way or another on multiple lines could mean the differece between perfect convergence and pretty significantly divergent lines in some cases, there are a few places where I draw the line twice to look at that variation myself and consider it.

Anyway please pass me, I don't want to have to deal with any more of this.

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
