Hi!

I feel like my boxes got somewhat worse as I progressed in this exercise... x)

There are three possible reasons for this, I think :

  1. I was more careful when I drew the first ones, spending more time on them and trying to make them as perfect as possible, double and triple-checking everything to be sure. As time went by, I might have traded quality for quantity, and spent less time on each one.

  2. I drew the first ones right after doing all the exercises from Lesson 1, which strengthened my sense for perspective and my line accuracy, and I eventually took a break from the challenge to focus on other artistic projects and courses. The boxes made afterwards might have suffered from that break.

  3. At some point I started experimenting with different processes to construct the boxes, and it's possible that it affected the end result. I started out drawing the four corners of the top or bottom plane, depending which one was closer to the viewer, but eventually I switched to drawing the three lines of the corner closest to the viewer in a Y shape (as instructed). I feel like the second method doesn't give the best results for me, but it's just a hypothesis.

Anyhow, that's done! And we move forward...

Congratulation on finishing this challenge. I personally think that you did a pretty good job overall. Also I think that you're boxes improved. Especially from the first page, where your lines are more wobbly. There are minor things, like you're boxes are a bit repetitive and you put more boxes than requested in one page. But I must say your boxes look crisp as hel. Good job!

For your concerns, I'd like to address some things

-I don't think you should put too much effort into your boxes, double or triple checking everything. We're trying to learn to draw compositions and scenes, and you're boxes will be only scaffolding for your objects. Yes scaffolding is so important but they will be under other objects and textures anyways. Trying to make them perfect is pointless in my opinion. There is an article in lesson 0 on overworking yourself which might be helpful.

-If you feel like you're starting to lose some points of lesson 1, build yourself a 10-15 mins warm-up routine. You can also do just this routine in busier days to keep the muscle memory.

-For your experiments, I really didn't see much difference. You're free to experiment and find the best way to work for yourself. Don't stop yourself from doing that.

Enjoy lesson 2 and keep up the good work.

Next Steps:

Keep your lines and boxes crisp. Let yourself experiment. Enjoy.

I think your bring up valid points, and I'll make sure to keep them in mind in the future. Also, those warm up exercises are already part of my drawing routine, so I'll just keep doing them like you mentioned.

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
