(Reflection) Things I think that could be better:

Cleanliness and line economy -> I tend to "line correct" when certain lines goes off shoot. Sometimes in more complicated constructions, drawings accumulates many stray chicken lines.

Confidence of line -> When outlining the silhouettes of a leave. I tend to slow down to trace over the silhouette in order to darken it. Though slowing down causes my line to wobble and look unrefined.

Texture of leaves -> Unconvincing. My fault for not closely studying/observing the texture xD

Mental hurdles -> While getting better with each lesson. Working in ink still gives me anxieties of "what if" I make a bad drawing. Working more in ink definitely helps build confidence incrementally.

  1. Are you doing branches by connecting each ellipse individually with compound strokes as Uncomfortable instructs? It looks like you might be trying to track the whole branch with one fell swoop. Personally I think that way is easier and gives a more pleasing result, but we should also try to stick with the instructions.

  2. Really impressed with the plants you did. Not only are they convincing constructions but they all have unique character, which is a huge compliment. You do have a tendency to hatch the shadows on a lot of your drawings. It looks good but may also go a little bit outside the instructions we're supposed to do.

Overall, superb work. Your enjoyment of the process shines through and inspires me to do better!!

Go on to the next lesson! Nice job!!

Hello! Thank you for taking your time for the comment.

  1. Good point! I don't think I was doing that when I darken the outlines of the branches. (Instead opting it to do it in one fell swoop). That certainly does explain why my lines look off.

  2. Thank you! Hatching is a really bad habit of mine. I'll definitely be more mindful and opt of hard shadings in lesson 4.

Cheers! :)

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
