Hi beve102

Organic Arrows

About the first one: the organic lines look fine, I can’t see any errors on those, so good job!

Leaves

These ones are really good — they’re not stiff, and they fold naturally, just like real leaves would. Great work here, I really liked the spiked one!

Branches

It seems like you had a bit of trouble with the branch that’s bending like an “n”, but aside from that, every branch seems to follow the rules. Good job on this one!

Daisy

This one is really pretty. I can’t tell if you drew the pollen stems, or maybe I’m just confused by the amount of lines. Apart from that, everything else looks fine, so good job!

Pitcher Plant

This one is also great. I can’t see anything wrong with it, so good job here too!

Page 3 Plant

You did great during the construction phase! It can be a bit difficult to see the overall image here, so a bit of line weight could’ve helped differentiate the petals from the branch. Also, for the branch, using the forking method (drawing a small ball where they split) could’ve helped a bit. But aside from that, it’s an amazing drawing — congratulations!

Alter

It seems like you were a bit rushed here. The construction of the petals looks fine, but the construction of the pollen feels a bit hurried. Some of the stems at the ends look more like petals than pollen. Adding a bit of texture to the pollen could help make it look less empty, and some cast shadows would really help here — especially to show the “lower level” of the petals.

Shiitakes

The construction here is really beautiful — I really liked it. A little bit of texture would’ve made it even better. I saw that you tried to add some cast shadows, but it seems like you didn’t notice the branch — don’t worry, mistakes happen! Also, on the small shiitake at the intersection, there seem to be some random lines. Remember that too much randomness can make it look a bit cartoonish. When adding texture, try to observe the reference image closely to capture those small details and make your drawing more convincing.

Verbena Hastata

The construction here is good too! But from what I see in the reference, you could divide the plant (except for some parts) into two areas: the lower part (the flowery area) and the upper part (the spiky one). The lower part doesn’t look random at all — it’s more like flowers than leaves. For the upper part, try to remember the texture lessons from the second section — you could apply that knowledge here!

Water Lilies

In the central part (the pollen area), I can’t really see much, but from what I see in the upper drawing, you did draw them. Try to use line weight to make that area clearer. Apart from that, I can’t spot anything wrong, so good job!

Ipes

I see that you tried to break this flower into basic forms — great job with that! Just remember that this flower is quite wrinkled and rough, so adding some texture could’ve helped a lot too.

Next Steps:

Please make an organic drawing of any plant.

Try to choose one that isn’t too difficult.

First, take some time to observe it carefully as you draw.

Please don’t rush even if the drawing takes more than an hour.

After that, try adding some line weight, and finally, add some texture to complete it.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

On the flipside, they tend to be on the cheaper side of things, so if you're just getting started (beginners tend to have poor pressure control), you're probably going to destroy a few pens - going cheaper in that case is not a bad idea.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
