Hello and today I will be critiquing your work for today. However, unfortunately, I have a problem with your submission and it may require your utmost attention, and should not be dismissed. Because of that I'm questioning whether you are taking these homeworks seriously or you do have an effort in making a solid homework since this is giving me an interpretation that you may have rushed your submission. Do not take this as insult or take this personally, if so then I apologize, but let me explain and convey why have this sort of view.

Thinking in 3D

So first of all we are introduced to the first section of the lesson and that is thinking in 3D: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/1/video So basically, and you are not alone in this, is that we understand that we are putting down lines and shapes down on a flat page, and with it we have to convey the illusion that it is not. Though there is a problem in making it believable and it is because of the fact we are aware of it and we can struggle in putting the right marks in making the belief that they are 3D. Approaching this should we have the idea that this flat paper should not define our drawings but as a "window" to that world.

Arrows:

So what is the reason that I'm explaining this? Well this will bring us to the first submission which are the arrows. The exercise will help us explore and be familiar with all three dimensions of space and be free from that flat piece of paper. This exercise is important since it will give you the idea that you are not essentially drawing on something flat and also perspective comes to play here. Reviewing your homework, I apologize, but it did not give me the interpretation of it being 3D, it came out as flat defined by that flat world because there is minimal reinforcement of it. The lines of the arrows or curves have no connection with each other, the arrows do not compress, and the size is static, meaning there is not much perspective of the scene. There are some slight wobbles here and there, however, it flows smoothly, it can be corrected with a bit of ghosting. Line weight also comes into play in this exercise for clarity, and seeing the submission is non-existent, because of that I recommend you to use the application of line weight. The only mistake in the submission is that it came out rather flat and gave me the idea of there is not much depth of the scene.

Organic Forms:

Another important exercise are the Organic Forms with Contour Lines, they are present in later lessons, they will reinforce the idea of the illusion they are 3D, and the idea of Contour lines helps us understand how the surface turns in 3D space. In lesson 1, we are introduced to degrees and the degree shift: https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/5/degree Reviewing the submission, the degrees of the contours are static, especially in the ellipses. Example of what I meant: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/6822fd02.jpg. I also noticed the Ellipses were a bit wobbly, I suggest you to prioritize confidence over accuracy, a throwback from Lesson 1: https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/remember, because of the submission, it gave me an assumption that I want you to give me an answer:

Was the reasoning for the Sausages that are drawn twice in the submission were to cover up the mistake about accuracy? I don't want to jump into conclusions but the sausage can be drawn once with the help of the ghosting method.

Great job in the Contour curves, they were aligned and snug. Both exercises that I have noticed is there are additional lines in some sausages and it looked pretty messy and confusing.

Texture and Detail:

This section will help you better understand to observe, study, and transfer the information of your reference, and to ULTIMATELY slow down, since the information you observed will automatically will be thrown out the window, and so the process will be slow. I will keep the texture section brief since this is not the main focus of DaB.

So in this section, I will be focusing my attention on: Cast Shadows; https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/2/castshadows, Explicit texture, and the transition.

Texture Analysis:

Reviewing the submission, the starting texture was not crumpled paper, it is recommended as it can let you settle in and be familiar with texture.

So a few problems with the submission, the transition from dense to sparse is not that smooth, because of that the textural forms feel outlined: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/7d1f3467.jpg. Remember that you are

drawing cast shadows and not lines: https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/2/castshadows.

Dissections:

Great job, there isn't much to say here other than to keep in mind the silhouette, and key information in the last exercise.

Construction:

We are now at the last section of the lesson, and to answer your question of having something missed is that you forgot to submit one out of two of your organic intersection.

Form Intersections:

Upon reviewing the first page of the homework, I am completely confused about the intersection of the boxes, they were very vague in showing their relationship with one another. Some even have an intersection but there is no 3D shape beside that certain form. I also noticed that there are a couple of mistakes conveying the shape of the form so I recommend to view this guide to help you with the intersections of different forms: https://imgur.com/a/forms-intersections-first-aid-pack-6Inx5Bz

Next is the forms are not that intersecting and it just reveals the forms are in front of another and not intersecting: https://imgur.com/a/KFoPstp. So the main objective of the exercise is to capture that these forms resemble the same scene, meaning no using stretched forms, and having consistent foreshortening. Also Form Intersections share the same mistakes on the previous lessons such as: Repitition of lines, confidence, not ghosting, etc.

Organic Intersections:

Finally we arrived at the last homework of the lesson. Seeing the submission, it immediately looks the same as the example homework provided, but the submission I have been given has one additional sausage. If you have any problems, I'll have to redirect you to uncomfortable's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgcmB26CHLY&feature=youtu.be. Contour curves has improved, if you are attempting to draw the shadows, it is better to approach them like this:

https://imgur.com/M9JJfr4. I am not sure if you are aware, but even if: The shadows should not stick to the form, but they should be casted onto other surfaces beneath the form: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/516f8d4f.jpg.

So this concludes my critique on the submission, I have another question for you is that have you finished the 250 Boxes Challenge? I have this question in mind because the boxes in the Form Intersections felt unnatural and not the product of finishing the challenge.

Overall, I apologize but I will have you to repeat Lesson 2, there are many mistakes on the submission, and it surprised me, the submission felt like no effort was shown, a joke, and feels like you are rushing. Please do not take this as an insult for you to realize that all your work was all in vain and hopefully for you to take homework seriously, because the submission had given me that idea. I can not let you proceed to the next Lesson. Unfortunately, Sorry.

Next Steps:

Repeat Lesson 2 Homeworks:

  • Except Dissections
When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something we've used ourselves, or know to be of impeccable quality. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

On the flipside, they tend to be on the cheaper side of things, so if you're just getting started (beginners tend to have poor pressure control), you're probably going to destroy a few pens - going cheaper in that case is not a bad idea.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
