Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your 250 box challenge.
Linework
-You are using the ghosting method to good effect as you are getting accurate lines while maintaining a good deal of confidence. Sometimes it is hard to see your linework because it overlaps with the colored lines so try to avoid it in the future.
-It seems to me that you did not use lineweight, it is not a necessary requirement, but it is important that you get used to it. The important thing to keep in mind is that you should be very subtle with it and only add one superimposed line to each edge of the box. I want to show you this diagram which shows how to add lineweight correctly. You can also see it applied here on a box.
-It is nice to see that you are using hatching and you are applying it correctly, as you have taken your time with each additional line, and it looks tidy rather than rushed, I did notice that sometimes you hatched the wrong face, but you corrected this as you progressed through the challenge.
Box Construction
-I do notice many instances where you extended your lines in the wrong direction, remember that the initial Y determines the direction in which our lines will be extended. We also gain a little bit of information regarding the vanishing point, because these will be aligned with our initial lines. For more on the importance of extending our lines in the right direction take a look at this section, I did notice that you corrected this mistake very late in the challenge.
-Keep an eye for lines converging in pairs as shown here, the more you practice the better you will get at this and eventually your lines will converge in sets rather than pairs, one thing that can help you is to start thinking about the relationship between each pair of lines and the angles they form respective to the vanishing point, you can see it exemplified on this diagram. You can see that the inner pair of lines will always be quite similar, and the outer pair can vary a lot depending on the location of the vanishing point, the further you place it the more parallel they will become, but due to perspective they will never be completely parallel or diverge.
-Lastly I want you to keep experimenting with the orientation and angles of each box, for most of the challenge, if you have trouble coming up with new boxes take a look at this image and use it as reference. I also want you to keep experimenting with the rates of foreshortening; you stick mostly to boxes with dramatic rates of foreshortening, so try boxes with more shallow rates with the vanishing points outside the page. Experimenting is a good habit that helps us to better understand the concepts we are exploring here. I hope you try to nurture this habit in the future.
Okay, you clearly have some things to keep working on, I’ll leave you some additional work. Take your time to read the material and the feedback I gave you here, good luck.
