Hello, I'll be critiquing your lesson 3 submission today.

organic arrows- I feel like these are a little messy, and many of them do not seem to be changing perspective. however, your lines are neat and solid

leaves- solid, with good constructional lines.

branches- some lines overshoot the ellipse mark, making it look janky; this is a common beginner error. otherwise, solid

construction- overall, you did a good job with your constructions. the constructional shapes are clear, and most of the textures are good. however, I felt that the texture on the 6 drawing (the cactus) looked a bit rushed and in parts didn't wrap around the shape. however, the main focus is construction, and you did well in that department.

an additional note- according to the instructions, less than half of the constructional drawings should be done from the demos, meaning at most 3 out of 5 drawings done with the demo. however, 4 out of 8 drawings are done with the demo for your lesson 3 submission. Remember to read the instructions more carefully in the future.

Overall, not bad, but I feel that your organic arrows are rushed and you need one more constructional drawing to finish the requirements of the homework (less than half the drawings from the demo.)

Next Steps:

  • 1 page organic arrows. remember to add perspective. refer to the lesson 2 page if you're confused

  • 1 additional constructional drawing of a plant of your choosing.

If you do these I think you're good.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi, thank you for the critique. I've completed both revisions: the organic arrows and constructional drawing. I focused more on the construction of the latter, rather than the details. Kindly let me know what you think.

Yes, the organic arrows look much better. Your construction n the second image is also very clear and strong.

Next Steps:

Move on to Lesson 4. Good Luck!

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
