i congratulate you with finishing the homework of the first lesson, may there be many more!

first tidbit: please don't draw exercise B on a page where you've started exercise A, also: try to keep the doodling on the homework pages to a minimum and try not to make up an exercise to fill the page, try to really focus on the exercise that is requested of you.

i put this at the top because you repeat these mistakes a few times and it makes it harder for the people trying to critique you.

superimposed lines

it looks good, it looks sharp and i can clearly see you've ghosted them and then drew them with confidence.

as with any beginner that i've critiqued i recommend you incorporate this exercise into your warmup.

ghosted lines

most lines look like they've been drawn with confidence and some lines look like you've rushed them or didn't take the time to ghost the amount that you need before you can make a mark.

i recommend you find out which of the problems you are facing and then focus on that during warmups.

table of ellipses

overal the exercise is done fairly well though a few pointers:

you are very erratic in how much you superimpose lines, for some ellipses you do it 5-7 times for some you don't do it and for some you do it the right amount (3).

for some ellipses it also looks like you've not ghosted them, either you haven't or you haven't ghosted enough.

you should try to incorporate this into your warm up.

ghosted planes

the lines look like they've been drawn with confidence and they look good however:

try to fit more planes in the page so they fit snugly together, you've left huge gaps and that just means you haven't utilised the page fully.

tables of ellipses

most lines look good and they've been drawn with confidence though some fall out of the plane and some don't fit snugly in their box, this problem is most often caused by not ghosting enough, also really try to superimpose the lines 3 times before moving on to the next ellipse.

ellipses in funnels

your funnels are too large and because of that you haven't utilised the page fully,

also because you made your funnels too large a lot of ellipses fall short of reaching the funnel,

to make up for this lack of space you've drawn rectangles and drawn ellipses inside that, it might be a good exercise to do during warmup but it isn't what is asked for in this exercise.

plotted perspective

lines are drawn clean and the perspective works, i have no real critique of this exercise.

rough perspective

try to refrain from drawin X's through work that you messed up, you yourself need to see where your fault lies and try to learn from it, all too often when you mark through something it means that you'd rather forget about it.

but the point of these exercises is to look and remember where your faults lay so you don't run into the same problems in the future.

the exercise itself though looks fine and don't worry, the problems you have while making this exercise will be resolved in the 250 box challenge.

rotated boxes

your rotated boxes form more of a rectangle than a circle but it looks good, lines are drawn with confidence and the perspective works.

organic perspective

try not to chickenscratch when you do these exercises, try to (still ghost) and draw the mark at once, also try not to go over each line multiple times for exercises like these.

the boxes are pretty well constructed and you can clearly see the perspective.

if you disagree with my critique i'd love to hear it.

Next Steps:

please draw 2 more pages of ellipses in funnels and try to:

  1. draw them snugly

  2. try to make the funnels smaller

  3. try not to stray away from the funnel exercises.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Apparently QuirkierTurtle tried to reply to you, but accidentally hit the "report" button instead. Here's what they tried to say:

after you've finished the pages of ellipses you can send the link back to me, once you've done that i'll mark it up as complete. thanks for the feedback and i hope i'll see your art more often ;)

Basically just reply to the original critique with your new work, and they'll get notified.

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
