Repeating DrawABox

3:05 AM, Monday March 23rd 2020

This is just a quick question. What do you all think about restarting DrawABox from lesson 1 after completed the whole curriculum from lesson 7?

Why not learn something new? like the planes of the head, color, etc.

Follow Ctrl paint or get a skillshare sub. so much to learn,

Stay uncomfortable.

Yeah, I've heard of them. They do seem interesting, although their lack of a feedback community is what bothers me. I'll check them out in my own time.

You're welcome to do it if you feel you'll benefit from it. You'll maintain any progress you made with your badges and such. If you're just doing it to avoid having to figure out what to do next, I'd suggest you incorporate more drawing for fun so that you're not just drowning in an endless cycle of exercises and actually get to draw what you want to at some stage.

You're right, I actually didn't do much drawing for fun, I need to start making artwork for myself and have DrawABox somewhere in the background at some point.

you could improve somewhat but you definitely won't improve as much as the first time you did drawabox. If you want to do it go ahead but why go through all that again to learn something you already learned. You could use that time far more effectively, like learning anatomy or practicing gesture drawing or anything really. To me I feel like although you might learn something and strengthen your skills somewhat from doing it again it is a big waste of time and the time would probably be better spend practicing something else.

I see your point, I do know of other stuff to learn from like what Frosty have suggested above. I do plan to move on after "graduating" DrawABox, just want to see if anyone attempt to repeat DrawABox and why.

I don’t see much point to it, particularly if you’re a patron. Everything you need to repeat, you’ve already been repeating, daily (the exercises in lessons 1-2). Everything you haven’t, is just more of the same, but put into context.

But I haven't been repeating the exercises... I should start doing them now.

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
