I am currently on lesson 1 exercise 5. I haven't doing so well at the exercises, but I know that is supposed to happen. What concerns me is if I am working too fast. Sometimes I watch the Videos from ScyllaStew while I do the lesson. But while I'm taking maybe a few minutes per sheet, she's taking longer. Should I slow down or pace myself?
That's more or less the reason we push Scylla's recordings - they're an excellent way to illustrate to students that the exercises can take a lot of time if we're really taking the time to think through each choice and decision we make. While I can't speak to your pacing specifically, if you genuinely mean you're taking a few minutes per page, I can't really imagine how one would do that without rushing. Of course, I don't know specifically what you mean by a few minutes, so I can't say for sure.
Might not be a bad idea to swing by our discord chat server and post your work in the #lesson1 channel to get others to assess whether you're rushing.
Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.
The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
