Hi Ardee. I'll be reviewing your homework.

Overall, the lesson looks great: you clearly understood the concepts behind every part of the lesson. There are just a couple of issues I would like to point out:

  • On some of your forms on the Form Intersections exercise, your line gets wobbly. Sometimes the same thing happens when you apply lineweight. Remember that every line, including the lineweight, should be made ghosting and drawing from the shoulder, even if it's not entirely accurate. Prioritize flow and confidence over accuracy.}

  • On some of your textures (especially the rope one) you had a tendency to fell either to explicit detail or scribbling. It's not a lot, your textures overall look great, but be careful with that; we only want the cast shadows for this course, and those always have a certain pattern to them, they are never random.

  • On the Organic Forms exercises, you overdid the amount of curves/ellipses of the forms. It's alright, they are well made, but take it into consideration as you move forward. Most of the time, a couple of curves/ellipses do the job just fine.

Also, remember to fill in all the shadows you make with black. Try to get a brush pen to help you on that. And that's it, great work overall. Feel free to move on to Lesson 3.

Next Steps:

  • Move on to Lesson 3.
This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Thank you very much for the critique - will be looking out for improving the above !

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
