I joined Patreon after completing L1, 250 Boxes, and L2. This is my original L1 homework that I finished in July 2020 and submitted to the community website (I got some feedback there).

Thanks for the critique and for the Patreon program!

Hello and congrats on completing lesson one. I'll be taking a look at your submission today. Starting with your superimposed lines these are off to a fine start. You are keeping a clearly defined starting point with all of your tapering on the opposite end. Your ghosted lines and planes are coming along very well. You are using the ghosting method to great effect to achieve confident linework with a pretty decent degree of accuracy that will get better and better with practice.

Your table of ellipses are looking pretty good. You are doing a good job drawing through all of your ellipses and although you do seem to be trying for smooth ellipse shapes I think you end up distorting them pretty often. I'm seeing the same issues with some of your ellipses in planes as well. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/12/deformed I think you are probably still a bit too hung up on accuracy and our slowing down your stroke to compensate. That said I do think you are getting smooth ellipse shapes here and there you just need to be a little more vigilant about it. Try and confidently put down your marks and rely on the accurcy you build up ghosting the motion beforehand. This will probably be less accurate at first but accuracy tends to come with mileage and consistent practice more than anything else. Your ellipses in funnels are largely having the same issue. I think you are ellipses are in a decent place. Work a little harder on getting that smooth ellipse more consistently but I'm seeing any real bad habits developing which is good.

The plotted perspective looks great nothing to mention here. Your rough perspective boxes turned out well. You don't seem to be having too much problem with the ghosting method and drawing from the shoulder for confident linework. You're still getting a little wobble here and there likely because you are course correcting for accuracy like you are doing with some of your ellispes. I don't see at as a real big issue though and I think it's something you will get the hang of the more you practice. You did a good job extending the lines back on your boxes to check your work. As you can see some of your perspective estimations were quite off but that will become more intuitive with practice.

Your rotated box exercise was a nice attempt! You linework is looking pretty good here. You also did a good job drawing through your boxes and keeping your gaps consistent. You running into a bit of a pretty common issue here where you aren't actually rotating some of your boxes but are instead simply drawing them moving back in perspective. Please check the lesson notes here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/notrotating This is a great movie to come back to after a few lessons to see how much your spatial thinking ability has improved. Your organic perspective exercise turned out well for the most part. You seem to be getting very comfortable with getting consistently confident linework which is fantastic. Your box constructions are pretty good but I'm seeing a few wonky ones here and there so the 250 box challenge will be a good next step for you.

Overall this is a really solid submission. You showed a lot of growth with your line confidence and quality. Your ellipses still need some work so make sure you are practicing them during your warmups. Otherwise I think you are understanding most of the concepts these lessons are trying to convey very well. I'm going to mark this as complete and good luck with the 250 box challenge.

Helllo Rob, thanks for the feedback. I've been doing tables of ellipses ever since I finished this L1 and I've seen a big improvement in their shapes and confidence. The practice has made a big difference indeed.

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
