Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
2:00 PM, Thursday July 4th 2024
28.VI.24 - 4.VII.24
Good morning, good afternoon or good night. I will criticize your homework.
Superimposed lines
Its lines seem great to me, as they are smooth, maintain a consistent trajectory and have no fraying on both sides.
Ghosted lines
The lines are still very good. Good accuracy and good use of ghosting.
Ghosted planes
The same as the previous exercise.
Table of ellipses
Its ellipses are smooth, drawn twice, and are consistent. Despite some positioning errors, you did a good job.
Ellipses in planes
Great again.
I don't know if this counts here, but, in this course, when you make a mistake in executing a brand you shouldn't try to correct it, no matter how bad it was. Instead, you should act as if nothing had happened and move on to the next place. Despite this, I understand your correction and that you are aware of your error.
Funnels
There was only a slight misalignment of some ellipses with the central axis, but you understood the exercise.
Plotted perspective
Very good.
Rough perspective
Good job creating the perspective of a vanishing point and extending the lines.
Rotated boxes
The boxes in the lower right corner are slightly sunken, which creates an overlap that shouldn't happen that way. Furthermore, a box in the upper right corner has a slightly wrong convergence.
But even with these small mistakes, your work is solid
Organic perspective
Very good (The recommendation for this course when using line weight is to apply it only to the outer contours and only in overlapping areas).
Next Steps:
Go for the 250 boxes challenge.
Don't forget the 50% rule and do some of the exercises in this lesson as a warm-up before drawing.
Congrats on completing Lesson 1! I'll section the critique into the Lines exercises, the Ellipses exercises, and the Boxes exercises.
Lines
Your lines are well executed, confident, and do not fray on both ends. Good job!
They also don't arch, and there is no line-repeating going on, which is good.
Ellipses
The ellipses are done confidently and drawn through 2-3 times. The Funnels are also mostly even and generally consistent, which is great.
Boxes
The Plotted Perspective is well done; the vanishing points are consistent.
The Rough Perspective exercise is also executed properly, and so are the Rotated Boxes, which are nicely done.
Finally, the Organic Perspective exercises are done according to the instructions, although some of the planes of the boxes are off.
In general, you did well on Lesson 1!
Next Steps:
You are ready to move on to the 250-Box Challenge! I recommend reading the Drawabox articles on boxes and perspective if you haven't already. Good luck! :)
nothing to add to the other two critiques, except that your lines are looking really good. Good job!
This is a remarkable little pen. I'm especially fond of this one for sketching and playing around with, and it's what I used for the notorious "Mr. Monkey Business" video from Lesson 0. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.
Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
I would not recommend this for Drawabox - we use brush pens for filling in shadow shapes, and you do not need a pen this fancy for that. If you do purchase it, save it for drawing outside of the course.
