Hey there, this is a resubmission of the same submission I made in November with the purpose of entering the official marking route. It was marked as complete unofficially so I continued onto complete the 250 boxes, which hasn't been marked yet in anyway.

Since making that attempt, I've been using DAB methods, such as ghosting, and have had a better understanding of 3d space since doing the 250 box challenge. So I'd say my level is still AT LEAST upto this submission.

This is what was contained in my original post:

"Full transparancy, I didn't realize I was meant to do a 2 of Super Imposed Lines, Ghosted Planes, Tables of Ellipses and Ellipses in Planes so a 2nd page of these was done after the completion of Organic Perspective. These also will look different as I didn't have a 0.5 pen until later so the earlier pages were done at 0.6.

I can definitely see the issues with my linework, I found is hard to commit to lines many of the times as I've always had the issue of overshooting but coming to the end as I was finishing up page 2 of the missing excerises, I really felt I started to get there a bit more. With my organic boxes, I can look at all the broken ones and know how to fix them but actually drawing them in the moment is a different story so I'm hoping the 250 box challenge can help.

Thanks guys :)"

Hello and congrats on completing lesson one. My name is Rob and I'm a teaching assistant for Drawabox who will be handling your lesson one critique. Starting with your superimposed lines these are off to a fine start. You are keeping a clearly defined starting point with all of your wavering at the opposite end. Your ghosted lines and planes turned out well. You are using the ghosting method to good effect to get confident linework with a pretty decent deal of accuracy that will get better and better with practice.

Your tables of ellipses are coming along pretty good. You are doing a good job drawing through your ellipses and focusing on consistent smooth ellipse shapes. This is carried over nicely into your ellipses in planes. It's great that you aren't overly concerned with accuracy and are instead focused on getting smooth ellipse shapes. Although accuracy is our end goal it can't really be forced and tends to come with mileage and consistent practice more than anything else. Your ellipses in funnels are looking fine. I'm not seeing any real issues here. Your ellipses are off to a great start but there's still room for improvement so keep practicing them during your warmups.

The plotted perspective looks great, nothing to mention here. Your rough perspective exercises turned out pretty good. It's great that you are keeping up with the confident linework on these. You are also doing a good job extending the lines back on your boxes to check your work. As you can see some of your perspective estimations were quite off but that will become more intuitive with practice. One thing that can help you a bit when doing a one point perspective exercise like this is to realize that all of your horizontal lines should be parallel to the horizon line and all of your verticals should be perpendicular(straight up and down in this case) to the horizon line. This will help you avoid some of the slanting lines you have in your constructions.

Your rotated box exercise turned out well. I like that you drew this nice and big as that really helps when dealing with complex spatial problems. You also did a good job drawing through your boxes and keeping your gaps narrow and consistent. While the rotations here aren't perfect this was a very good effort overall. This is a great exercise to come back to after a few lessons to see how much your spatial thinking ability has improved. Your organic perspective exercises are looking pretty good. You seem to be getting comfortable using the ghosting method and drawing from your shoulder for confident linework which is great. That said I am noticing a slight tendency to course correct some of your lines midstroke which is introducing some wobble. Try and not be too overly concerned with accuracy at this stage and just really commit to your mark once you begin to make it. Accuracy should only really be though about when plotting your points and while ghosting. You are doing this for the most part but I saw this in a few spots so I just wanted to mention it. Your box constructions are pretty solid for the most part and you are definitely developing a sense for how box lines converge to vps. The 250 box challenge will be a great next step for you to make these convergnces even more accurate and solid.

Overall this was a really solid submission that showed a nice deal of growth. Your line confidence and ellipses are both coming along nicely. I think you are understanding most of the concepts these lessons are trying to convey quite well. I'm going to mark this as complete and good luck with the 250 box challenge. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the informative feedback! As this was my resub for my lesson 1, I had already completed my 250 a few months back so I assume I should do another 50 before I submit that for official critique?

Thanks :)

Yup, that's correct. That makes it so we can confirm that you did indeed complete the challenge, while having more recent, relevant work to critique.

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
