Draw a box Lesson 1 Full Submission - Album on Imgur

Post with 22 views. Draw a box Lesson 1 Full Submission

My full submission for Lesson 1. I struggled the most with ellipses at the start (including those darn funnels), and rough perspective.

I believe my biggest mistakes for ellipses was inaccuracy -- especially for the wider degree ones. For rough perspective, my line quality is abhorrent -- but I have resorted to fixing that greatly and I do believe I am much more accurate on my line work as I go through my 250 boxes (Currently on 156 or so).

Any critique is hugely appreciated!

Thank you kindly for checking out my hw :)

Hiya, Tora! So, first things first, I'd like to direct you to this section of Lesson 0 https://drawabox.com/lesson/0/4/grinding Not so much so that I can tell you off for grinding (though that too!), but more so for you to understand that the required number of pages isn't there because that's all that's needed for you to fully understand (and demonstrate that you understand) the concepts, but rather because that's all that's needed for me to understand if you understand. Even if it's not obvious from the page, I'll be able to tell. It's kind of my job, y'know? So, if at all possible, please don't grind.

Anyway, this is a solid submission. A few things...

It's a little hard to tell if you're doing it (I think you might be? sometimes?), but, just to be safe, I'll mention that you should plot start/end points for all of your lines (including and especially the non-diagonal lines of the planes.) In regards to the rough perspective exercise, remember that any lines that don't head to the VP can either be parallel to the horizon or perpendicular to it- nothing else. Also, because of the rules of perspective, the back face of the box is of a similar shape to the front face, just smaller. That is to say, if the front face is a square, the back face cannot be a rectangle. So, if your points suggest a line that doesn't behave as you'd expect it to, that means that they're incorrect, so don't commit to them. The rotated boxes exercise is fairly good. The back faces don't rotate as much as they should, but that's alright. Good job on the organic perspective exercise, too.

Thank you so much!

I tend to get overly self critical and struggle with forcing myself to just move on if I know I can do it better -- thus the grinding. But what you're saying makes complete sense, we're aiming for efficiency! Thank you again!

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
