Hi there I'll be handling your lesson 2 critique.

You're making good progress towards understanding the concepts introduced in this lesson, below I'll be listing some things that will hopefully help you in your future attempts at these exercises.

  • Your arrows are off to a good start and flowing nicely. My biggest concern in this exercise is that your lines are quite messy, it appears like you're trying to apply line weight but not restricting it to sections of the arrow that overlap as instructed here which gives everything a sketchy messy feel rather than a confident one. Keep experimenting with foreshortening as well, by utilizing it in both the arrow itself as well as the negative space between the arrow's curves we can create a stronger illusion of an object moving through 3D space as shown here.

  • In the organic forms with contours exercise your forms are getting a bit too complex. Our goal in this exercise is to create simple forms with both ends being the same size, and to avoid any pinching, bloating, or stretching along the form's length as discussed here. Some of your contour lines appear like they weren't drawn confidently from the shoulder and appear quite stiff, just remember confidence is our first priority and we'll improve our accuracy with mileage. As a final note I'd like you to work on shifting the degree of your contours more. The degree of a contour line basically represents the orientation of that cross-section in space, relative to the viewer, and as we slide along the sausage form, the cross section is either going to open up (allowing us to see more of it) or turn away from the viewer (allowing us to see less), as shown here.

  • Your textures are a bit messy in spots but you're showing that you're focusing on shadows and trying to recreate them using your reference rather than working from memory or just focusing on outlines. Good job in these exercises, most people tend to struggle and you show you're on the right track you just need to build up more mileage.

  • If you feel like you don't fully grasp form intersections just yet don't worry, you're on the right track but right now this exercise is just meant to get students to start thinking about how their forms relate to one another in 3D space, and how to define those relationships on the page. We'll be going over them more in the upcoming lessons. Your forms here look pretty solid and like they all belong in the same 3D space, good work.

  • A few of your forms in the organic intersections exercise don't always make sense the way they behave with one another but again you show you're on the right track with this exercise and just need more mileage. Your forms are starting to wrap one another showing you're thinking about the 3D space you're working in and you're pushing your shadows so that they're being cast rather than just hugging the form creating them. This is a great exercise for building your understanding of how these organic forms as well as light and shadow behave before moving on to more complex pieces, be sure to keep experimenting with it and lighting positions in the future.

Overall this was a solid submission, you have a few things to work on and tidy up but I believe you show an understanding of the concepts being introduced and just need more mileage. I'll be moving you on to the next lesson, keep practicing previous exercises as warm ups and good luck!
