Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
7:54 PM, Friday August 19th 2022
Just finished lesson 1, I'm excited to move onto the next lesson!
Hello Qwal, great job on completing your first lesson, I hope you will have a memorable journey in drawabox! The name is Tamago and I will be critiquing your lesson today.
Lines
First off your superimposed lines were consistent, while there were some wobbly lines here and there thats completely fine as you made sure that they frayed on only one sides instead of both sides, that is a very common mistake I see when looking at other peoples first lesson. On your other homework there were some arched and wobbly lines but thats okay! To fix the arched lines, try to arch in the opposite direction. For the wobbly lines, be confident as well as taking more time on ghosting the line. But thats about it, your lines are pretty good!
Ellipses
Good job on the ellipses, it really shows that you confidence in them as well as drawing through the ellipses 2-3 times. Most of your ellipses touched the lines of the table or the ghosted planes. However there were some that didn't touch the planes, one way to fix that is to ghost the ellipses and not to be afraid of the lines, its ok to be out of the line since you should prioritize confidence over accuracy.
Boxes
Good job on your boxes! Your rotated and organic boxes are well done, just only a few distortion such as in the rotated boxes, the top right boxes looks distorted but that is okay since you shouldn't worry that much on the rotated box for now as they are just introduction for perspective. 1 minor problem I notice is that your boxes in rough perspective are wobbly, a recommendation is that you put dots so you can plan out where to draw your line. Overall your boxes homework is great.
Next Steps:
I notice that your lines and ellipses had some inconsistencies such as wobbly lines and ellipses not touching the lines.
Which I why I believe a way to work on both of these is by doing...
2 pages of Ghost Planes
2 pages of Ellipses in Planes (Do the ellipses on the ghost planes)
These revisions would improve on your confidences on lines and ellipses
Thank you so much for the feedback! This was super helpful. When doing the exercises you recommended, I spent more time on each line using the ghosting method. I think that these revisions have helped with my line confidence, thank you again! Here are the completed revisions: https://imgur.com/a/O0pUa53
Ahhh I can tell that you improved a lot when looking at those 2 pages, more ellipses were touches the lines and the lines were more straight. I believe you are ready to do the 250 box challenge good luck!
Next Steps:
Time to do the 250 Box Challenge!!
Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.
Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.
These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.
We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.
Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
