Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
3:02 AM, Tuesday January 26th 2021
All the exercises from lesson 1, thanks in advance for to taking the time to review and provide me help, feedback and guidence!
Herr we go:
Starting with lines, they look good. Your lines look pretty smooth and confident. In super imposed exercise your lines start from single point, which is good.
But in perspective session your lines become much worse. Is that because you didn't use ghosted method? If so be sure to draw every straight line using ghosted method.
Ellipses look a little wobble. This might happen because you didn't used ghosted method here or didn't activate your shoulder pivot. Other then that it look like you try to keep it within the bounds and repeat each ellipse 3 times. That is good.
Perspective section look decent. Your main mistakes here is wobble lines and 3x3 box grid in rotated boxes exercise ( 5x5 is preferable)
Next Steps:
To be sure that you understood lesson correctly I would like to see one page of any ellipses exercise. Remember to use ghosted method when dealing with ellipses and lines
Thanks for taking the time to look through my exercises and identify my trouble spots! Now that you mention it, I do see the dramatic decrease in line quality in the perspective section. As suggested I did another page of the ellipses in planes focusing on trying to activate the shoulder pivot (though I caught myself having trouble not using the elbow occasionally) and ghosting each line.
Great work!
You line quality indeed improved.
You can try to improve your drawing posture by holding your pen differently and drawing lines in most comfortable position to you (With more confidence you will extend selection of drawing positions). Also you can rotate piece of paper (Lesson 0 or lesson 1 introduction have deeper information about this).
Now feel free to endurance you skills in 250 boxes challenge.
Next Steps:
Good luck in 250 challenge. If you feel exhausted or lost and unmotivated you can always take a break or ask a question in drawabox discord. There are nice people around here.
Thank you!!
Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.
The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
