Your feedback will be appreciated! Thanks in advance. And apologies about the heavier bleedthrough in later pages -- it seems like I was using lower quality paper.

Hello I'll be handling the critique for your 250 box challenge

Linework

-Starting with your lines, you are using the ghosting method to good effect as your lines are drawn with a good deal of confidence while maintaining their accuracy. I did notice that your linework dropped in quality as you moved through the challenge, your applications of lineweight are much less accurate and in some instances you repeated your lines. The important thing to keep in mind is that if a line goes wrong you should not try to correct it by drawing on top of it, as it only makes the mistake stand out more. By getting rid of this habit you will start to develop the patience that is required to do your assignments to the best of your ability.

-It is nice to see that you are using lineweight, and you have used it correctly, most boxes have subtle lineweight, but it gets thicker in some cases. It is better when we limit the use of this tool, so only apply one superimposed line, if you end up making the lineweight too thick you will end up turning your boxes into mere graphic shapes. Keep practicing your superimposed lines, as sometimes your accuracy is off, but this tends to come with more mileage

-It is also good to see that you are using hatching and it is looking tidy in some cases and rushed in others. In order to avoid rushing, you should give each individual mark as much attention and focus as possible, use the ghosting method to think about each mark’s purpose and how you are going to achieve it best. Once you have gone through the planning phase you should draw your marks with confidence. Each line is no less important for being part of a larger group, so take your time with each one.

Box Construction

-You have used the line extension method correctly and all of your sets of lines seem to be converging which is correct, you never had any issue with lines diverging away from each other. One thing to keep an eye out for is lines converging in pairs as shown here , one thing that can help you to avoid this is to start thinking about the relationship between each pair of lines and the angles they form respective to the vanishing point. These are exemplified in this [diagram](https://i.imgur.com/8PqQLE0.png-9 , you can see that the inner pair of lines will always be quite similar and the outer pair can vary a lot depending on the location of the vanishing point, the further away you place it and these lines will be quite close to parallel but not completely as they always have to be converging

-It is good to see that you are experimenting a good deal with rates of foreshortening and orientations, try to keep experimenting with shallower rates most of yours are dramatic and if you have trouble visualizing new orientations for your boxes then take a look at this image which you can use as reference.

Experimenting is a good habit as it helps us to form a better understanding of the concepts we are exploring in this challenge, so I hope you keep nurturing and displaying this habit in the future.

Okay you clearly have some things to keep working on but I have no doubt you will continue to improve with more mileage and practice, I’ll go ahead and mark this lesson as complete.

First off, congrats on finishing.

It looks by box 160-ish you started really getting the feel for them. It takes a long time to get there some people need more then just 250.

Some of your lines wobbled in places but it's normal when drawing so many of these. Honestly these are very consistant and you made corrections as you kept moving forward. Good variation in box sizes, convergences and they feel solid by the end. I would def say you got a lot out of this. Good job!

Next Steps:

Use these boxes in your every day sketches, it's a great tool to use to help improve your organic sketching.

Move onto lesson 2!

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
