250 Cylinder Challenge

long time this took, very long time
Hi Quan, I will be critiquing your challenge submission today.
First of all, alot of the ellipses that are on the far end of your cylinders are not forshortened correctly. The ellipses that are further have a wider degree then the one that is facing the viewer, always. Watch this segment of the video to understand what I mean by this: https://youtu.be/RBwHU72-Abk?t=856

This is definitely the reason why alot of your cylinders that are not in cubes look off.
The other problem that appears in alot of your cylinders is that the lines you put to correct the minor axis look off to me. When you find the minor axis, I find that it is helpful to imagine folding the paper over itself to have both of the sides of the ellipse line up, so that way you find the true symmetrical center line of the ellipse wherever the fold is made. The minor axis line will (in ideal circumstances, where the ellipse is drawn perfectly symmetrical) bisect the ellipse into two equal halves. If you need too, I find that it is a good practice to actually physically fold your paper in the way i described to definitely see where the minor axis actually should go.

Now lets move on to the cylinders in the cubes. First of all, these look very nice, they are very solid and you seem to have a good sense of perspective. The cylinders themselves are also well executed and thought out. The problem comes in with your error checking method, you forgot to extend the sides of the cylinders with the red lines to check to see how they look in perspective. This is a pretty massive oversight, and without applying every step to the error checking method to your exercise you missed out on building some of the skills that this 250 cylinder challenge sought to instill in you.

I understand that it is easy to go on autopilot when doing daunting challenges like this and miss crucial steps. I actually did something very similar when I did my 250 cylinders, so your not the only one lol. Just make sure in the future to pay closer attention to every aspect of the course material before you draw the 250.
Because of this, I am going to ask you to do some more cylinders in order to make sure you get the full value out of this exercise.
Next Steps:
do 50 more cylinders constructed around a minor axis, making sure the degree change in ellipses is correct and by improving your minor axis by using the folding method to bisect it in the best way possible
and 25 more cylinders in boxes with every line projected, including the lines of the cylinders that you missed last time.
These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
